A new Cornell semester means the return to the beautiful Ithaca fall weather, hanging out on the slope with friends, the existential dread of classes and, most importantly, spending all of the $500 allocated to my Big Red Bucks (BRBs) on fun little drinks.

I am a firm believer that you can gather a lot about a person based on the contents of their everyday bag. Not every item has to be profound, but each one holds a story that says something about its owner.

I could not think of a better use for “Milkshake” by Kelis. We went from President Donald Trump loving Sydney Sweeney for being a registered Republican and her American Eagle jeans ad to sorority girls copying the Gap x KATSEYE “Better in Denim” dance. I wasn’t expecting a jean ad competition to emulate the political climate either, but here we are.

Emil Bove, who instructed Department of Justice lawyers to tell courts to “fuck off,” is now a federal appeals court judge. A federal judge is a principal officer of the United States of America. Under Article 2, Clause 2 of the Constitution, they must be appointed by the President, with the advice and consent of the Senate. Requiring both the President and Congress to agree on an appointment was meant to guarantee that only the most qualified candidates would be given the honor of serving as a federal judge. This is a position that, once obtained, cannot be taken away absent impeachment. Only eight judges have been removed in this manner throughout our nation’s history. As Justice Scalia reportedly once put it, “[s]o long as you stay awake on the bench and don't drool, there's nothing they can do about it."

Everyone you know, their mom and even their dog was there when Taylor Swift announced her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, on the New Heights podcast alongside her now-fiance Travis Kelce. I don’t even need to paint the picture; chances are you’re at least one of the 22 million views on that viral episode. Ever since the final curtains closed on the Eras Tour — the most successful world tour in music history — the planet has been on the edge of its seat in anticipation for what the monster on the hill would present next.

My father was once ranting about his deep discomfort at open casket funerals, so naturally I sought to confirm that, in the event of his death, we should keep his casket closed. To my question he replied: “Do whatever you want. I’ll be dead!” The discomfort of knowing I will plan my father’s funeral without any input or objection from him is the same discomfort I feel at the idea of consuming posthumously published materials. While some have a desire to respect the deceased and their wishes, the other side often leaves it unsaid that the dead cannot feel your respect, and, therefore, there is no immediate or material reason to avoid consuming posthumously published work.

A notification buzzes my phone. Looking down, I see it’s from Spotify alerting me of the release of Earl Sweatshirt’s newest album Live, Laugh, Love. Eagerly, I open the app and click on the first song. Recently, I’ve been listening to music in a car, which, in my humble opinion, is one of the best places to immerse yourself into sonic landscapes. At this particular moment, I just so happened to have a three-hour drive ahead of me; perfect for a top-to-bottom listening of ‘Live, Laugh, Love’ and then some.

It’s 5:30 p.m. on the Arts Quad and there’s a sea of men dressed in variations of the same outfit. Books read upside-down, Labubus, matcha lattes — they’re everywhere. The audience of over 500 students is abuzz with conversations about menstrual cramps and female musicians (Laufey and Clairo to be specific), and you ask yourself, “What is this?”

Consumerism’s “final boss” is nowhere to be found. Its final victim, however, looks right through the screen. “Run, don’t walk!” “Come with me to get!” “5 summer must-haves!” are all dull phrases that echo across TikTok shop hauls and Amazon storefront ads, urging you to move fast, buy now and don't think twice because you must get it! Each scroll as repetitive as the last, only expanding the surface area of things to consume. But if it wasn’t the Labubu, the Sonny Angel, the Smiski, or the Beanie Baby, maybe it’s the stanley, the owala, the hydroflask or the yeti. Another craze, another plushie, another polyester shirt — the next purchase already queued up before you even finish the last.

From Aug. 20 to Sept. 1, hundreds of thousands of people from all over New York flocked to the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse to enjoy food, rides and activities. The Fair — an almost two-week-long celebration of the Empire State — attracted Cornellians from in-state and beyond, giving them an introduction to what Upstate New York has to offer.
