No. 4 men's lacrosse faced the University of Albany in its season opener, winning the match, 11-10.
The Red will start its season on the road against the University at Albany. The game will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Cornell faced UAlbany twice last year, the second coming in the second round of the NCAA tournament. The Red won both meetings, by scores of 18-11 and 15-6, respectively.
This summer, sophomore midfielder Luke Robinson realized his lifelong dream by representing Team Canada as he helped lead the team to the men’s lacrosse U20 world championship.
Cornell Athletics added eight new coaches to its varsity sports this summer.
While some might consider a NCAA championship the best way to end a collegiate career, long stick midfielder Walker Wallace ’25 is trading his lacrosse cleats for football ones as he will join UVA’s football team as a tight end.
Cornell lacrosse attackman CJ Kirst ’25, a national champion and NCAA goals leader, is nominated for an ESPY Award as men’s sports Best College Athlete.
With the distinction, Kirst rounds out one of the most impressive men’s lacrosse careers of all time.
“No one ever had any doubt,” said senior goalkeeper Wyatt Knust. “Everyone believed the entire way, and that focus got us to where we needed to be.”
“We stand on the shoulders of giants,” Buczek said. “We're upholding a very long and proud tradition, and we're just trying to make sure it's the best version of it that it can possibly be.”
For the first time since 2005, the two top-ranked teams will meet in the national championship.
"We knew every time we got in the huddle that we were playing our game, we were comfortable and our defense was doing a good job holding them down.”
“We’re excited for the opportunity to hopefully right a huge wrong. We have a huge test in front of us. Their team is well-coached, tough and talented, so they’re going to push us.”
239 goals made him the highest-scoring Dl men’s lacrosse player of all time. 74 goals is the most any Cornellian has achieved in a single season. The record books tell one story. It’s impossible, however, to quantify Kirst’s leadership, charisma and character.
Though Cornell was behind by one goal at the end of every quarter, ultimately, a last-minute lead and defensive lockdown gave the Red a 13-12 NCAA Quarterfinal victory.
“It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it’s got to be tough. It’s got to be disciplined. Whatever gets it done.”
Senior attackman CJ Kirst will be continuing his lacrosse career with the Philadelphia Waterdogs, as decided by the draft show beginning at 7 p.m. tonight.
