“This is a program that's learning how to win, how to win close games and how to compete for 60 minutes,” Swanstrom said. “The preparation this week wasn't perfect, but the energy, focus, and effort was really high, and now it has to be the standard for Cornell football.”
Football will face Bucknell on Saturday in hopes of securing its first win of the season.
While No. 22/25 Harvard University (4-0, 2-0 Ivy) have proven themselves to be a fierce competitor within the Ivy League, the Red (0-4, 0-2 Ivy) hoped to catch them off guard behind the leadership of Bass-Sulpizio, who logged his first ever career start.
“They’ve always had a really strong front seven. It’s a suffocating way to play defense, if you have the ability and the talent to do so. And [Harvard] has the ability and the talent to do so.”
The score tightened up during a dominant third quarter for Cornell, but, despite the homecoming-day hype, the Red lost its momentum in the final 15 minutes and fell 41-21 to the Raiders.
Last year, Colgate ran away with a 41-24 win over Cornell in the Red’s season opener.
This week, the football team will take on Colgate University for homecoming weekend, a team with which the Red have a 129-year history with and a tied all-time series record of 51-51-3.
