Dear President Kotlikoff and Provost Bala,
Nestled in the bowels of the Olin-Kroch Library complex is one of my favorite gallery spaces: the Hirshland Gallery in the Rare and Manuscript Collection. This academic year, the gallery features the exhibition "Plant Based: Botanical Innovations From Paper to Poison." The library describes: “The artifacts gathered in this exhibition demonstrate the essential role plants have played in human communication, health, clothing, and design across the ages, showing that the phrase ‘plant based’ can apply to much more than food and diet. Plant Based explores multiple dimensions of our varied interactions with plants, and celebrates the earth’s florae, their myriad uses, and the inspiration humanity has discovered in their bounty.”

Cornell Athletics Hall of Famer and four-time Olympic medalist Rebecca Johnston ’12 announced her retirement from hockey on Thursday in a letter posted to Hockey Canada's website. Johnston, 36, is one of the most important women’s hockey players in school history, helping establish Cornell as a top-tier program in the NCAA. The forward holds the program’s NCAA-era career goals record and was the first Cornellian to be named to the All-ECAC first team and the first to win ECAC Rookie of the Year.
Claudia Goldin ’67, awardee of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Economics and Henry Lee Professor of Economics at Harvard University, held her lecture “Why Women Won” in George Staller Auditorium on Thursday afternoon to an audience of approximately 450 students and faculty members. Goldin spoke on the evolution of women’s rights throughout history, describing the increasing gender equality in the economic and political field as a win for women, before hosting a Q&A session.

Following the destruction of Marsha Dodson field last year, the field hockey team was left without a home field and dedicated practice place, much to the dismay of million dollar donor and alumni and former tennis athlete, Marsha Dodson ’75 M.R.P. ’76. Now, the field is ready for the undefeated team’s fifth game of the season against No. 17 Yale, according to Cornell Athletics.
While I doubt this concept is listed in the dictionary, I feel as though a majority of people living in big communities have experienced the concept of a real-life recurring character.

The football team is on the road for the second consecutive weekend as it travels to Yale for its first Ivy opponent of the year. The Red will look to repeat the magic of last year’s homecoming win, where Cornell delivered a decisive 47-23 victory over the Bulldogs.
On Sept. 14, Jean Smart won her fourth Emmy for “Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series” for Hacks. Coincidentally, I started watching Hacks not too long ago. I recently started the third season, and it’s clear to me why Smart won this award. But in what I’ve seen of the third season, no moment has stood out more than the opening scene, where we follow a blonde — someone we assume to be Deborah Vance (Smart’s character) — as she walks through the Palmetto, the Vegas club that stripped her of her residency, as “Evil Woman” by Electric Light Orchestra plays. It turns out this is not Deborah, but an impersonator, and Deborah is too booked, busy and successful to stop by the Palmetto. The song choice is particularly striking, especially in retrospect, given that the third season focuses on Deborah’s bid for a late night slot with the help of a scorned Ava (her former writer). The song felt both fair and unfair — while Deborah is notorious for putting herself first and not thinking about how her actions affected those around her in the past, “Evil Woman” disregards her growth as a character over the course of the first two seasons. Nevertheless, it’s a phenomenal song that’s part of an equally phenomenal album, and my first instinct was to be overjoyed that I was hearing it in a show created almost 50 years after its release. Thus, for the Deborah Vance of it all, I’ll be taking a look at the 1975 record that houses “Evil Woman” called Face the Music.
Autumn’s cool breath gently blows on our simmering, sun-kissed skin, chillingly reminding us of the “Hot Girl Summer” that simply did not go our way. But, as pumpkin spice season swings into full effect, allow the luscious taste of your favorite spicy latte to cool your sunburnt skin.
