There’s a defining moment senior infielder Ella Harrod remembers from early on in her Cornell softball career. It happened in March 2023, as she and a fellow freshman — catcher Lauren Holt — were boarding the team bus after a disappointing road loss early in the Red’s conference schedule.

How do we choose to remember tragedy? Are we even capable of it when time has passed and the people who lived through it are gone? Every year on April 24, Armenians all over the world gather to remember the tragedy that took place in the year 1915, when the Ottoman government issued orders to carry out the mass deportations and killings of its Armenian citizens. In every Armenian there is a desire to remember and convey the events of this tragedy, one which the current Turkish government denies to this day.
As the end of the semester approaches and prelims and incoming deadlines draw near, I went to see the #OpenToWork concert by the Mediocre Melodies. Amid the frenzy of the semester, Mediocre Melodies promised a night of ‘average’ a cappella, full of laughs — the perfect combination of comedy and music to lighten your swamped schedule.
Who doesn’t love a good gamble? It’s like exercise, flooding your brain with high levels of dopamine. That just so happens to be the neurological response to alcoholism and substance abuse as well, but for some reason betting and gambling are much more socially acceptable and widely promoted. Instead of Drug Abuse Resistance Education and ads comparing vaping to metal monsters, gambling addictions are instead supported with new, easily accessible platforms like DraftKings and FanDuel, allowing for online bets to be placed on sports games. Long gone are the old days of personal, tangible gambling with exciting horse races and vibrant Las Vegas casinos. Now, in the advent of predictive marketplaces like Kalshi and Polymarket, not only are the participants of these platforms at additional risk compared to typical gambling sites, but the industries which they bet on are as well.
Two Cornellians, Cherie Animashaun ’27 and Priya Abiram ’26, were awarded the Her Campus e.l.f.ing Amazing 22 Under 22 Class of 2026 award on March 26. The award showcases 22 graduating college women who are young changemakers in their respective fields, including advocacy and public policy, entrepreneurship and environment and STEM.

I think we’re all in a Big Time Rush right about now; it’s just that point in the semester. Still, it’s important to take time for ourselves amid the mountains of work, and the way a friend of mine chooses to do that is by watching kids’ television and movies. Don’t get it twisted, though — this is the majority of what she watches all the time. For a movie night, how about some Cloud 9? Want to sing along to something? Forget Wicked, put on Teen Beach Movie or Descendants. You may be chuckling, but I think she’s onto something here. Watching childhood TV movies from Disney and shows like Victorious, iCarly and Big Time Rush from Nickelodeon takes me back to a simpler, significantly less stressful time — a valuable feeling when I’m staring down the barrel of finals week; that being said, I unironically listen to the music of Big Time Rush all year round, similar to my friend. And why would I be listening to it any other way? Big Time Rush’s music is — also unironically — really good. So, I’ve decided to dedicate this Test Spin to their 2010 debut album BTR, and end this semester the same way I started it: by listening to some boy band bangers.
The night of April 19, the all-female a cappella group Hearsay performed their annual spring concert, and in doing so, gave the audience a sample of the breathtaking vocal talent here at Cornell. Their close-knit community, genuine attitude and dedication to the craft all shone through, making for a truly memorable experience and a reminder of this school’s a cappella prowess.
After close to eight months of work, the Provost’s Committee on the Future of the American University released a set of preliminary documents this week that articulate core principles and emerging understandings that are meant to guide a broader community conversation about Cornell University’s path forward. We now look to you, the Cornell community, to let us know where you agree and disagree.
