Dunbar's Closes Doors After 36 Years in Collegetown

It's that big. I thought about it last month. I thought about it last winter. I was still thinking about it three days after it already happened. The 2001 Head of the Charles. Annually, for one October weekend, over 250,000 people crowd the shores and perch atop all seven bridges on the racecourse along the Charles River in Boston, making "it" the largest international regatta in the world. This year the US, German, Dutch, French, and Croatian national teams had entries in the event. Even though more people attend "it" than the Super Bowl, game seven of the World Series, NBA Finals, and the Stanley Cup Finals combined, it remains an event that most people have never heard of. And trust me, I wouldn't have it any other way. Our bus pulled into Boston around 4 p.m. Saturday, October 20th to a glorious spectacle of reds, whites, blues, and everything in between. Getting off the bus brings back a flush of memories from the previous year's rendition. I recognized the familiar smell of roasted sausages, heard the delirious clamor of spectators, tasted the brisk warm autumn wind, and touched the sacred ground with my bare feet. "It" is an event only a small subset of the population appreciates. There was once a time where rowing was the sport of choice, a sport fit for the king to gaze upon, a sport worthy of large betting wagers. This weekend, Boston provides a snapshot of the way all major regattas used to be, albeit with a twist of the modern flare. Seeing all of the boat trailers, spectators, and majesty of the event makes me long for the recognition rowing used to have. I wondered whether I would get desensitized to this awesome spectacle if all major regattas were like "it"? Would the Charles River lose it's unequivocal allure? Perhaps, but special or not, this river remained as my main focal point, as it must. There have been countless stories of bridges, shorelines, and water taking bites out of people and boats indiscriminately. Her charm has put the best under her spell and broken many hearts. Normally, the coxswain, my position, does not have a large impact on an outcome, but in this race, my role is magnified. If I can take the right lines through all of the bridges and turns, then I can shave precious seconds off the boat's time. An average crew with a great coxswain can beat a good crew with an average coxswain. And this is just that kind of race. I am not saying that being a coxswain is physically taxing, but mentally it can be. Keep in mind I am driving the school's $35,000 boat that is 60 feet long, with a rudder the size of a credit card. On top of that I am responsible for the safety of eight fathers' sons through hairpin turns, bridge abutments, other impeding slower crews, wind, current, and noise. This little bit of extra pressure is only comforting because it is the same pressure that all of the other coxswains must deal with. Fortunately, I am very confident in my abilities and I know that I can drive better than most of them on the water. Bottom line: Donald Lee is the man. I am happy to report that we finished no. 10 overall and no. 5 among college crews. More importantly, we were within 4.6 percent of the winning time which guarantees us an entry for next year's regatta. What is most promising is that we had a bad piece and rowed at a lower cadence than most of the other schools (rowing at lower cadences usually means less speed with elite crews) and shortchanged ourselves. Despite all that, we managed to put out a decent effort. The women's entry in the championship eight was also successful in that it finished almost twenty spots better than its bow number (bow number equals relative seedings based on the previous year's result). The women's four finished 6th overall and were within 3.2 percent of the winning time. It was a good weekend for Cornell crew and we all look forward in racing in Princeton this next Sunday for the Princeton 3-mile Chase as we were riding off back to Ithaca Sunday evening.Archived article by Donald Lee

The Cornell men's and women's polo teams began their seasons last weekend against the University of Connecticut in Storrs, hoping to follow up the immense successes of the 2000-2001 campaigns. The women's squad won the national championship last year and began its defense with a 25-5 defeat of Connecticut behind 12 goals from Taylor McLean. However, the Red needed to fight through a much more difficult match against the Central New York Polo Club the next day, which ended in an 11-11 tie. The defending champ's next challenge will be to defeat the Huskies again, in a Saturday night matchup in Ithaca. After that, it will play Skidmore on Oct. 26 which will be followed by the USPA Old Timers Tourney that same weekend. Likewise, the men's polo team began its season this weekend in Connecticut. It will next play the Huskies again on Oct. 19 before joining the women's team in contesting the Old Timers Tourney the next weekend. Included in the long term schedule is the William Field Invitational in mid-November, a title that Cornell won last year. In addition the men will be looking, throughout the season, to reach and surpass the achievements of last year, when they reached the national semifinals before suffering a 24-17 defeat at the hands of a University of Virginia squad that they had beaten two prior times during the season. Anything they achieve, though, will have to be done without last year's top player, Jeff Embow, who scored 11 of Cornell's 17 goals during the Virginia defeat. The man at the focal point of the effort to reach last year's heights is Dave Eldredge '81, who returns to once again, coach both teams. It will be a busy winter and with a packed slate of contests. Both teams will have ample opportunities to show that they are up to the challenge of meeting the expectations brought by past achievements.Archived article by Andrew Bernie

Despite all the rumors, there are the occasional rays of sun in Ithaca, although few are as consistent as Sunny Weather. Rarely does a band's name so precisely indicate their sound. Yes, one might accurately guess what Slayer sounds like without hearing them, but there is no better way to describe the music of Sunny Weather than their namesake. Theirs is the music of open fields and children dancing under blue skies. And things are only looking up for the quintet. Sunny Weather rose in 1996 as a trio playing all original music. The band hit a turning point when frontman Trevor MacDonald traveled to Louisiana in 1998 on a musical Odyssey of sorts. "It's a lot different down there," Trevor says. "Music brings everyone together, and everybody dances. The music really is for the dancing." After falling in love with the rural music communities, Trevor picked up the accordion. On returning to Ithaca, he continued to be influenced by the eclectic roots and zydeco scene in Trumansburg, championed by the likes of Donna the Buffalo and fostered at the annual Grassroots Festival. The latter served as a powerful influence on what became the Sunny Weather sound, bringing Cajun and zydeco musicians straight from the holy land of the genres, New Orleans. Accordionist and band leader Preston Frank, one of the Mardi Gras town's most beloved performers, has become a good friend of the band. Trevor's own rhythmic squeeze box quickly become a trademark of the band, as it soon transformed into a 5-piece, with Amy Glicklich on vocals, scrubboard, and percussion. Glicklich remained for about three years, and has since moved on to a solo career, releasing Mosaic- Songs of Many Traditions, showcasing her hypnotic voice. As for their consistency, the band has remarkably appeared yearly at Grassroots since '97, and has put out a studio release perennially since '99, no small feat for a young touring band. This illustrates Trevor's and guitarist/vocalist Corey Small's prolific and adept songwriting, as well as a penchant for combining the spontaneous energy needed for the live setting with the musical chops necessary to produce consistently notable albums. The band has certainly grown since its inception (Greg English had never even played drums before joining the band). MacDonald describes it as going from playing "just as friends and having fun, to playing as musicians." This mutual creative growth has brought the group closer and influenced their approach to music. The band's eponymous debut immediately became a regional favorite. Fred Van Sickle Named Vice President for Alumni Affairs and Development

A Cornell University student was found injured in the Cascadilla gorge early yesterday morning and airlifted to a Sayre, Penn., hospital, the Ithaca Fire Department reported. The student, whose name and class year were not released because of confidentiality laws, did not sustain life-threatening injuries, said Linda Grace-Kobas, director of Cornell News Service. Firefighters responded to the College Avenue bridge after receiving a cell phone call at approximately 2:35 a.m. yesterday. The fire department did not know how the cell phone caller -- whose identity was not released -- discovered the injured student. The student was pulled out of the south side of the Cascadilla gorge, on the east side of Oak Street. He was "possibly walking" down the trail before the accident, according to Assistant Fire Chief Guy Van Benschoten. No other information was available about how the student sustained injuries as of late yesterday afternoon. The Ithaca Police Department as well as the Cornell Police Department are investigating the incident. Neither department had issued a statement as of yesterday afternoon. Both declined to comment to The Sun. Over the next couple of days, "They'll go back and question the person," Grace-Kobas said. "That's routine." Following the rescue, the student was transported by Bangs Ambulance to Hoy Baseball Field before being airlifted by "Guthrie 1" helicopter to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, according to a fire department press release. "We suspect multiple broken bones, but we're not doctors," Van Benschoten said. The University did not close any of the trails leading into the gorge following the incident, "but of course we urge people always to be careful," Grace-Kobas said. NASA Scientists Discuss New Horizons Spacecraft's Journey Past Pluto

Harvard certainly was greedy this weekend. Not only did it spoil Homecoming for all of the Cornell teams on East Hill, but it managed to beat the Red on the road as well. The Crimson handed the netwomen a 7-0 loss Friday and gave up just one point all weekend en route to the ECAC Division I Championship crown in Princeton, N.J. Despite losing late Friday afternoon to Harvard and again to Princeton Saturday morning, a solid 6-1 win against Brown in the opener was enough to give the Cornell women a seventh place finish overall at the tournament -- an improvement on last fall's eighth place result. Freshman Erika Takeuchi described her first visit to the ECACs as "a lot of fun," and praised the determination shown by the team throughout the weekend. She was especially positive about the match against the Bears, which saw the Red take five of six singles matches and two out of three in doubles. "We already had a lead against [Brown] after winning the point in the doubles and then stayed mentally strong through our singles matches," Takeuchi said. "We were all pretty determined to win, and it was a good start to the tournament." In addition to Takeuchi's win at the no. 4 singles slot, juniors Suzanne Wright and Daniela DelPrete, sophomore Kate Sternberg and freshman Akane Kokubo all notched straight set singles victories. Wright and DelPrete and Kokubo and Sternberg also paired for the two doubles wins that secured the first point early on. Points didn't come as easily for the Red, however, once Harvard took the court. The eventual champion handed the Red seven straight losses, and Takeuchi was the only player to even win a set. Saturday morning saw Cornell face a third Ivy foe -- the Princeton Tigers. The Red put up a fight, but fatigue and good play from the Tigers proved too much for the women, with DelPrete securing the only singles win of the match and the black and orange sweeping the doubles. Homecoming actually produced the most disappointing home result of the year for the Red men's soccer team (3-3-1, 0-2-1 Ivy) as it dropped a hard-fought decision to Harvard (7-2, 3-0) by a 1-0 score last Saturday night at Berman field. The loss was the first at home this year for the Red, who had outscored opponents 9-1 on the friendly confines of the East Hill in its other three home matches of the year. Harvard entered the game unbeaten in Ivy play, while the Red was without an Ivy win, but coming off of a huge home victory over Penn State from earlier in the week. The first half was mostly back and forth with each team struggling to string together a series of passes and not able to put pressure on either junior goalkeeper Doug Allen or his counterpart, Harvard's Jamie Roth. The teams seemed to be struggling with the strong southern wind that seemed to wreak havoc on long passes. The second half did not begin as quietly as the first ended however, as Harvard got off a strong shot that went just wide of Allen's net barely 30 seconds into the frame. Cornell countered, however, and spent much of the next five minutes down in Harvard's end where it got off several shots in the direction of the Crimson cage as well as earning several corner kicks. One of Cornell's best chances of the evening occurred when senior Ted Papadopoulos dropped a ball back to junior Kevin London who unleashed a wicked shot from 25 yards out. The ball screamed in on Roth, who was unable to get to it, but the netminder was saved by the post as the ball glanced the inside portion of the bar before bouncing across the box and out of harm's way. The play brought the crowd to its feet. Cornell certainly would have scored an elusive goal had it not been for the play of Roth. While the scoresheet lists him with only four saves, he seemed to be in the right place whenever Cornell pressed the Harvard defense. Head coach Bryan Scales certainly felt the Red lost a number of excellent opportunities Saturday. "We had our chances, we just couldn't finish them off," the coach noted after the game. "Up front we were looking for a lot of connections that weren't there tonight." Harvard regained its composure and finally connected on what it had been trying to do against a tough Cornell team when Michael Peller scored off a viciously quick counterattack at the 73:27 mark to make it 1-0. As the crowd looked on in horror, Peller streaked out of the midfield unmarked and received a pinpoint cross from Mark Baun. The half-volley beat a sprawled out Allen cleanly, and a team that had seemingly been pushed to the point of extinction was suddenly in the lead. "He scored a hell of a goal. Great goal, great serve," Scales said. When asked about the counter, Scales replied, "We talked about that at halftime, when we have the ball going forward that we have things sorted out in the back." Cornell spent the final few minutes desperately trying to break through, but despite a number of free kicks and opportunities against a Harvard team that was content to play defense it could not dissect either Roth and the Crimson back four. Common Council Votes to Support Living Wage for Workers in County

The Student Assembly upheld a recently passed resolution yesterday, despite urgings from some members to rescind the resolution and allow further discussion. "Resolution eleven" was unanimously passed by the S.A. on Sept. 27. The resolution changes the election process for the Student Assembly elected new student seats. Previously, the charter required that three freshmen and one transfer student be elected for these seats. The resolution changes this requirement and allows the four new student seats to be held by any new student, freshman or transfer, therefore allowing the four students with the most votes to win, regardless of class year. Ari Epstein '04, agriculture and life sciences representative, proposed the motion to rescind resolution eleven. Epstein first explained the need for transfer representation in the S.A. According to Epstein, the transfer student experience "differs markedly" from that of a freshman, and transfer students have "perspectives distinct from freshman that ought to be represented on the Assembly." In addition to concerns about properly representing the transfer community, Epstein also raised the issue that the date on which the resolution was approved may have been inappropriate. "It was approved on a day when one third of the members were absent for Yom Kippur, the holiest and most austere of holidays in the Jewish religion" he said. According to Epstein, the S.A. should have given some thought to the students absent due to the religious holiday. "I would hope that somebody would entertain the notion that someone from among that one-third of the Assembly that was absent might have something significant to say, not to mention the incoming new student representatives who were not yet sworn in at that time," he said. According to Epstein, "there was no concern shown for the students who were absent." Epstein said that his main concerns about the resolution, however, were that it was placed in new business and passed on the same day it was proposed, instead of being reviewed and discussed over a longer period of time. "It was introduced in one day and passed on the same day. That's not acceptable procedure. Things get railroaded through and people might be absent because they're sick or because of religious events, so this is one [problem] that could have easily been avoided," Epstein said. Several S.A. members spoke in support of keeping resolution eleven. Mark Greenbaum '02, executive vice president, said that the decision to pass resolution eleven was a "pragmatic move. You can't win with sixty votes and have someone lose with 300. That is totally unfair. That personally offended my sensibilities that this continually happened," he said. Greenbaum said the fact that the "[the resolution] passed by acclimation without a single objection in two minutes shows that a lot of these objections here were uncalled for." Nick Linder '05, new student representative, also voted against the motion to rescind. Because new student representatives were not sworn in at the time, they were not able to vote on the actual resolution eleven. Linder said that he voted against rescinding during this meeting primarily "on the grounds that two-thirds of the Assembly passed the resolution

Cornell Receives ‘StormReady’ Award

Perhaps the one thing that the biosphere of Hollywood has in common with the rest of the world is that there exist seven deadly sins that lead either to punishment or profit. The first sin is to make films that include non-stereotypical, latent homosexuality. The second is to cast non-professional actors who are your friends. The third is to be from New Jersey and to shoot all of your movies in New Jersey. The fourth is to reveal the name of your newest project to 2,000 students before telling anyone else. The fifth is failing to painstakingly separate yourself wholly from the characters you play and/or create. The sixth is to make a feature length film for only $250,000 after scoring two awards at Cannes. And finally, the seventh deadly sin of Hollywood is to tell aspiring student filmmakers to bypass the big business movie studios, and to film what they want and how they want by acquiring as many credit cards as possible and maxing them out in the name of film (Kevin Smith's Clerks was built on twelve separate mounds of debt). In true form, Kevin Smith has sinned against the Hollywood Church by purposefully engaging in each and every one of these foul deeds, and in turn, not-so-silently denouncing its dogma. What really makes Smith a Tinseltown renegade is the fact that his pact with the independent film devil has brought him nothing but love from the outside world. The 4,000 hands pounding on the backs of the wooden chairs in Bailey Hall at 8:15 Monday night, and the fair crop of people who remained in their seats until 2 a.m. on Tuesday morning, are proof that the Cult of Kevin Smith has grown to divine proportions. With tickets going for 7 bucks a pop, Smith's lecture attracted a huge crowd outside of Bailey Hall at 7:30 p.m. The insanity soon began with the opening of the doors, and didn't end until nearly six hours later when Smith finally said good night to the diehard fans who stuck around. This show of endurance certainly answered the question Smith posed soon after he walked on stage, in answer to the first of many hecklers who commented on the filmmaker's punctuality: "Who's the bigger asshole? The guy who's late, or the guy who stays?" Smith competed with himself for the title. But, those fans who had their special edition DVDs of Mallrats and Dogma autographed, or who finally got to ask that question that's been burning them about Clerks since 1994, may beg to differ.
