LETTER TO THE EDITOR | Time For Real Action

Reading time: about 1 minutes

Editor’s Note: Below is an edited version of a letter sent by Professor C. C. Chu, the Rebecca Q. Morgan '60 Professor Emeritus in the College of Human Ecology, to President Michael Kotlikoff.

Dear President Kotlikoff,

In my 44 years of being a Cornell University faculty member, I have never encountered any administrators’ coverup of such a horrific sexual assault scandal until under your leadership in October 2024. Your tenure has broken Cornell’s history of not covering up such horrifying sexual assaults like that alleged by a female student at the hands of the seven members of the Chi Phi fraternity on campus.

This coverup has resulted in irrevocable damage to Cornell’s reputation on both national and international stages. Where is the accountability, soul and conscience of your administrators?

During my 44 years at Cornell, I have witnessed several hazing and sexual assault cases, and other serious infractions by fraternity chapters at Cornell. This history clearly demonstrates the toxic nature of fraternity culture on campus, and, for the sake of all Cornell students and staff safety and health, particularly those female students, it is long past time to eliminate and completely BAN the Greek organizations from campus once and for all. They exist only for a subgroup of typically rich, spoiled young adults who feel they are better than their classmates, when in fact all evidence points to the contrary.

It is time for REAL ACTION, no more useless lip condemnation.

C. C. Chu, PhD

Rebecca Q. Morgan ’60 endowed Chair Professor Emeritus
