Every morning for the past two years, when the sun (and The Sun) rises, so have I, as I wake up early to work on The Sun’s daily newsletter. On weekday mornings, The Sun’s daily newsletter is sent out at 9 a.m. to a diverse audience of over 5,000 students, alumni, parents and Cornell staff, ensuring that they never miss a single story. The Newsletter team is who makes it happen. It’s not all about the day-to-day emails either – we also work on breaking newsletters and special projects covering everything from protests to Valentine’s Day.
Whether your interests lie in writing or design, the Newsletter team is a great place to explore email marketing and build your skills. You’ll master the art of writing a succinct summary of a breaking news story or a compelling opinion column while learning how to build eye-catching emails in Mailchimp, a popular digital marketing software. (The potential bullet points for your resumé write themselves!)
And if you’re interested in joining The Sun but aren’t sure what’s the best place for you, the Newsletter team is a perfect place to get your start at The Sun. You’ll get to be one of the first to read each of the dozens of articles The Sun puts out each week. There’s no better way to keep your finger on the pulse of the events and conversations that define our time at Cornell, and you’ll quickly come to understand the voice and role each of The Sun’s sections plays in our comprehensive coverage. In recent years, former newsletter staffers have gone on to all kinds of roles at The Sun, from Science writer to Associate Editor! And of course, we’d love to have you stick around with the Newsletter department too.
I’m coming up on my two-year anniversary of serving as Newsletter Editor next month (this makes me ancient in Sun years), and I can say without exaggeration that joining The Sun has changed my life. If you’re a detail-oriented night owl (or early riser!) who loves to keep up with the news, the Newsletter team would be a great place for you. Come find out what it takes to be on the other side of the inbox and apply for the Newsletter team today (and subscribe here for a Sunny start to every day)!
Applications are due September 19th at 11:59 PM. You can apply here.
