On Feb. 28, Cornell gymnastics fell in a tight match to the State University of New York Brockport by a final score of 192.900 to 192.725.
The Red led the all-time series between the two 36-6 before the meet. Previously, at the Empire St. Collegiate meet, Cornell bested Brockport and took first place.
In its opening event on the uneven bars, the Red earned a season-high score of 48.175. Junior Morgen Shambo secured a score of 9.675 to lead the Red. Brockport’s Aladiana Tosado led the overall score column with 9.750. Cornell took a narrow lead against Brockport’s cumulative score of 48.100.
Next up, Cornell took on the vault, with senior Sydney Beers leading the team with a score of 9.775. Beers’ score was the highest of the meet. In second, junior Michaela DeFrancisco earned a score of 9.750, tying her season-high score.
The Red dominated the floor event, bringing its typical energy and flair. Sophomore Josie Moylan earned her season-high score of 9.825 and placed second in the meet overall. Freshman Nora Sherman took fifth place with a score of 9.750.
“I bring a lot of energy to the floor, and I always get excited to go out and perform,” Sherman said. “We hope to continue to bring this energy into the end of the season.”
On the balance beam, Beers led the team with her score of 9.750, good for second overall in the meet. Meantime, the Golden Eagles were able to catch up to Red narrowly. In the end, the Red barely lost to Brockport by a 0.175 margin.
“The loss was an unfortunate combination of many factors,” Moylan said “Not everything can go perfectly during match day.”
Up next, the Red looks to continue its road streak and travel to Rutgers University. Cornell already has its sights set on its final meet of the season, the Gymnastics East Conference Championship on March 22.
“We are going to go through this last part of the season with the mindset of improving every day and hoping to secure a win at the finals,” Sherman said.
Cornell will travel to Piscataway, New Jersey on March 7. Coverage of the action will be available on ESPN+.
