![Harvard certainly was greedy this weekend. Not only did it spoil Homecoming for all of the Cornell teams on East Hill, but it managed to beat the Red on the road as well. The Crimson handed the netwomen a 7-0 loss Friday and gave up just one point all weekend en route to the ECAC Division I Championship crown in Princeton, N.J. Despite losing late Friday afternoon to Harvard and again to Princeton Saturday morning, a solid 6-1 win against Brown in the opener was enough to give the Cornell women a seventh place finish overall at the tournament -- an improvement on last fall's eighth place result. Freshman Erika Takeuchi described her first visit to the ECACs as "a lot of fun," and praised the determination shown by the team throughout the weekend. She was especially positive about the match against the Bears, which saw the Red take five of six singles matches and two out of three in doubles. "We already had a lead against [Brown] after winning the point in the doubles and then stayed mentally strong through our singles matches," Takeuchi said. "We were all pretty determined to win, and it was a good start to the tournament." In addition to Takeuchi's win at the no. 4 singles slot, juniors Suzanne Wright and Daniela DelPrete, sophomore Kate Sternberg and freshman Akane Kokubo all notched straight set singles victories. Wright and DelPrete and Kokubo and Sternberg also paired for the two doubles wins that secured the first point early on. Points didn't come as easily for the Red, however, once Harvard took the court. The eventual champion handed the Red seven straight losses, and Takeuchi was the only player to even win a set. Saturday morning saw Cornell face a third Ivy foe -- the Princeton Tigers. The Red put up a fight, but fatigue and good play from the Tigers proved too much for the women, with DelPrete securing the only singles win of the match and the black and orange sweeping the doubles. The netters will play their final matches of the fall at the ITA Individual Championships Oct. 26-30, before they begin preparation for the 2002 spring season. ![The Student Assembly upheld a recently passed resolution yesterday, despite urgings from some members to rescind the resolution and allow further discussion. "Resolution eleven" was unanimously passed by the S.A. on Sept. 27. The resolution changes the election process for the Student Assembly elected new student seats. Previously, the charter required that three freshmen and one transfer student be elected for these seats. The resolution changes this requirement and allows the four new student seats to be held by any new student, freshman or transfer, therefore allowing the four students with the most votes to win, regardless of class year. Ari Epstein '04, agriculture and life sciences representative, proposed the motion to rescind resolution eleven. Epstein first explained the need for transfer representation in the S.A. According to Epstein, the transfer student experience "differs markedly" from that of a freshman, and transfer students have "perspectives distinct from freshman that ought to be represented on the Assembly." In addition to concerns about properly representing the transfer community, Epstein also raised the issue that the date on which the resolution was approved may have been inappropriate. "It was approved on a day when one third of the members were absent for Yom Kippur, the holiest and most austere of holidays in the Jewish religion" he said. According to Epstein, the S.A. should have given some thought to the students absent due to the religious holiday. "I would hope that somebody would entertain the notion that someone from among that one-third of the Assembly that was absent might have something significant to say, not to mention the incoming new student representatives who were not yet sworn in at that time," he said. According to Epstein, "there was no concern shown for the students who were absent." Epstein said that his main concerns about the resolution, however, were that it was placed in new business and passed on the same day it was proposed, instead of being reviewed and discussed over a longer period of time. "It was introduced in one day and passed on the same day. That's not acceptable procedure. Things get railroaded through and people might be absent because they're sick or because of religious events, so this is one [problem] that could have easily been avoided," Epstein said. Several S.A. members spoke in support of keeping resolution eleven. Mark Greenbaum '02, executive vice president, said that the decision to pass resolution eleven was a "pragmatic move. You can't win with sixty votes and have someone lose with 300. That is totally unfair. That personally offended my sensibilities that this continually happened," he said. Greenbaum said the fact that the "[the resolution] passed by acclimation without a single objection in two minutes shows that a lot of these objections here were uncalled for." Nick Linder '05, new student representative, also voted against the motion to rescind. Because new student representatives were not sworn in at the time, they were not able to vote on the actual resolution eleven. ![After seven days of assessing what happened at Yale, the Cornell football team (0-1, 0-1 Ivy) will enter Colgate's Andy Kerr Stadium trying to prove last week's debacle was a fluke. Head coach Tim Pendergast began the season promising a revitalized run game balancing the Red's already respected passing offense. While most of the burden fell to senior tailbacks Evan Simmons and Justin Dunleavy, and junior fullbacks Nate Archer and Brian Ulbricht, it was senior quarterback Ricky Rahne who led the team in yards rushing with 32. In the end the highly touted running game amassed 66 grounds yards, even though the Elis boast arguably the best defenses in the Ivies. But unlike last year, the aerial attack couldn't compensate. Rahne threw for 136 yards, his lowest total in his career on East Hill. "Every game is a learning experience, and coach told us we're not going to give up on the run game," Simmons said. "As of Sunday, the whole team realized that we have a lot of work to do, as far as the running game. So it's been one of the major focuses this week in practice. Against Colgate it will be a chance to see how far we've gotten along." "Were not necessarily making adjustments," Pendergast seconded. "We can take a lot at what we did last week, evaluate it and tweak it where necessary." "We have to block better. We have to come off the ball better. We have to come off the ball better," he added. The offensive line's ability to protect Rahne and open holes in the defense will be key, as the Elis routinely held the rushers at the line of scrimmage and had Rahne scrambling. The Red's 4-4 defense had bright points, sacking Yale quarterback Peter Lee four times. But the scant secondary often left the middle of the field open. Junior linebacker Nate Spitler was one of the most effective defensive players last week, leading the team in tackles despite missing most of the first half due to dehydration. "Nate was clearly a bright spot," Pendergast asserted. "We clearly had other bright spots. We played well that first quarter. We played well defensively to start the third quarter both series. We played pretty well for a little over a quarter." If the Red can revitalize its running game, the defense will benefit. Last Saturday, it was worn down while Yale commanded time of possession in the second half. Hopefully for the Red, many of its woes have been ameliorated in practice while preparing a more fearsome foe in Colgate (1-2). The Patriot League team has a talented lineup of wideouts, a rushing game that ran for 293 on Cornell last year, and a defense that boasts as good or better athletes than Yale's. "They're a very explosive offensive. They've been for years," Pendergast remarked. "It has a tenacious defense. They run. They play well together. Dick Biddle is a defensive minded coach," he continued. "They have some very outstanding players. They're going to present us with some problems. There's no question about that. The mentality among the squad remains positive going into tomorrow's game. "The mood of the team has been outstanding," Pendergast said at a press conference Wednesday. "We probably had our two best days of practice in a row Tuesday and Wednesday." And the team will continue to focus and stay on track having eight games still left in the season. "[We're going to] keep doing the same things," Pendergast assured. "We don't believe in pushing the panic button. Last time I looked, we played one game.
