![The men's tennis team descended into West Point last Friday to play in the Army Invitational without three of its best players. Senior captain Stephan Paulovic and classmate Pat Hagan along with sophomore Julian Cheng did not attend the tournament due to job interviews among other conflicts. The absences from the roster did not disturb head coach Barry Schoonmaker, however, as the tennis team was facing less talented and less deep teams than their own. "It's just a chance for some guys to win some matches and get some trophies," he said. And Cornell did just that. The squad led by freshman Matt Cherner-Raft, was able to take the C and D flight singles and the B flight doubles. "Matt had a great weekend -- he didn't lose," head coach Barry Schoonmaker exclaimed. Cherner-Raft did not drop one set en route to the C flight singles title. He teamed up with junior Mike Laycobto win against the host team's pair of Josh Jones and Steven Srivastava. Schoonmaker was also pleased in the play of sophomore Scott Paltrowitz, who sat out most of last spring due to injury. "He had injured his wrist back in March," Schoonmaker explained. "The [invitational] was a great chance for him to get back on the court." Paltrowitz won the third and final flight for Cornell in the D flight singles, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, in his first time competing this fall. Sophomore Aravinda Neuman reached the B flight finals losing to Rutgers' Kevin Beilen, 6-3, 7-6 (4). "We were hoping and anticipating to do well," Schoonmaker said as the Red was facing Georgetown, St. Bonaventure, Marist, St. Johns, Rutgers, Army and Lehigh, most of whom he will see again in the spring. "They don't have as much depth," he added. ![The Student Assembly (S.A.) announced yesterday that last Friday's initiative to raise money for the United Way Sept. 11 Fund donated more than $2,400 after 983 students signed up to skip dinner. The program began Oct. 2 when sign-up sheets were made available in dining halls campuswide. The money comes directly from each donated meal, amounting to 32 percent of the total food cost or $2.66 per person. Although the original plan was to close two or three facilities to funnel the operating costs to the United Way fund, according to Nadeem Siddiqui, director of dining services, the number of donated meals was not deemed enough to close dining halls. The S.A. is pleased with the student response although it is lower than expectations. "I think overall it was a little bit less than we were expecting, but [983] students is better than zero students," said Michael Matly '03, vice-president of public relations for the S.A. "I think it was a positive experience overall." The program was finally approved after weeks of negotiating between New York State tax attorneys, Campus Life and Cornell Dining. Citing the "stressful week" of prelims, Siddiqui said the deadline for signing up was extended a second time from last Wednesday to last Thursday to get more donations. Lauro Ferroni '05 chose to give up dinner last Friday. "It was a simple way for me to contribute help for the Sept. 11 Fund," he said. Siddiqui hopes that there will be more opportunities for Cornell Dining to assist in helping with the World Trade Center relief efforts. "There are other things that we are taking on," he said. "I just wanted to make sure the effort is not lost in the process, that this won't be a one-time event." He is already looking into future programs, including sending students to New York City to cook meals for volunteers. Another event in the works is a banquet this spring with proceeds to be donated to proper relief funds. ![The negative repercussions of illegal file sharing on the Internet have become a reality at Cornell this fall, as a student faces legal charges after being caught downloading copyrighted material by Sony. "These corporations [Sony and other large media companies] routinely deploy scanning techniques that search the net for digital material for which they hold the rights," said Tracy Mitrano, policy advisor of the Office of Information Technology (OIT), in an e-mail sent out to the Cornell student body. "The picking of certain people is fairly random." "Sony may have just been scanning for a certain song that this student happened to be downloading," Mitrano said in an interview. According to Mitrano, the University must take precautions laid out in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act in order to indemnify itself from harsh legal implications. "The DMCA has a 'safe harbor' provisions for Universities when students are caught downloading. If it follows a set of procedures, then a university is relieved of responsibility," said Mitrano. "The University has to educate students about the laws surrounding copyright infringement and that is why a letter is now annually sent to students about file sharing and copyright." Mitrano emphasized, however, that the OIT, were not necessarily in total accordance with all the provisions of the DMCA. "There is no feeling in the OIT to go after these offenses draconiously, we are just doing what we have to do to relieve the University," said Mitrano. "There are many people at Cornell who advocate legislation to change the DMCA," she added. As to what causes Sony and other recording industry corporations to target College students, Mitrano sighted the potential financial gain. "Sony and other corporations target universities in general because they have much deeper pockets than any individual. University's have to actively take precautions otherwise Sony can collect oodles of damages." Students who are caught downloading copyrighted materials face disciplinary action at Cornell as well as the legal ramifications brought by the recording industry. "When a community member uses their computer to breach copyright laws, it violates the computer policies," said Mary Beth Grant, Judicial Administrator. "The typical educational sanction for a copyright violation includes agreeing to 'cease and desist' (that is, stopping the violating behavior), community work, writing a reflection paper, and receiving a disciplinary record (usually until graduation)." The harsh implications of file sharing are clear, but it remains to be seen as to whether or not the student population will heed the warning of the University and the DMCA. "I haven't actually downloaded any material since I got the OIT's e-mail," said Miriam Peterson '04. "It definitely made file sharing seem more serious, but if the Cornell really wants to stop this, I think threatening to take away Resnet or some more immediate consequence would really make students more wary." ![First game a fluke? Fuhgeddaboutit. The Cornell sprint football team regained some of its swagger, rumbling over Princeton 27-6 en route to its first victory of the season on Saturday. The Red's defensive quickness and power ground game, were simply too much for the Tigers (0-1) to overcome. "We lost some key seniors but this defense is as good if not better than last year," senior tri-captain Martin Vogel noted. "Last year our secondary was the strongest unit, but this year I think it is the line. All of us have played three to four years, and know what needs to be done. When the line is working well it frees up the defense to make big plays without losing coverage from blitzing as much." That Princeton wasn't ready for the Red rush was apparent from the first whistle, when the Tigers' Matt Babinski fumbled the kickoff into his own endzone before saving face with a 15-yard scramble. After a quick three and out, Princeton punter Peter Richter couldn't handle the snap and junior Eric Eisenhart recovered the fumble at the Princeton five yard-line. It only took two plays for sophomore Dean Coccaro to record his first career touchdown on a three-yard scamper up the middle. Coccaro is quickly establishing himself as the team's workhorse, gaining 122 yards in his first two games, including 41 against the Tigers. The rest of the first half saw both defenses display their mettle. On Princeton's ensuing drive, sophomore Matthew Wesley came up with his first career interception while shadowing his receiver along the sideline. Cornell got the ball back on its own 41, and Coccaro then ripped off a 30-yard run around the right tackle. But one play later, the Tiger defense knocked the ball from senior quarterback Sunil Gupta's hands, leading to a turnover. Gupta had a rough outing on his first start at quarterback. He threw an interception inside the Tiger 20-yard line on the next series and finished 2-for-4 for 27 yards. Nonetheless, Princeton's mistakes allowed the Red to pull away. Princeton recorded a 0-yard punt, a quarterback fumble and a 15-yard late hit penalty on consecutive series. The Tigers finished with eight fumbles on the day. "[Our] goal is to put the other team's offense in a hole early by stopping the run and forcing them to have to pass on third and long," Vogel said. "When you are sure a pass is coming it makes it easier for us on the line to rush and make sacks, and for the secondary to make their interceptions." The late-hit penalty left the Red on the Princeton 23-yard line, where junior Charlie Tam turned on the magic. He took a handoff from Gupta and slid left, but quickly ran into his own man. He then bounced back, and took off to his right where there was nothing but Schoellkopf turf in his way, making it 13-0 in favor of Cornell. The Red added two more scores in the third quarter, putting the game out of reach. Tam ran in his second touchdown, setup by a Gupta-to-Ormsby 27-yard pass play, and junior Adam Romeiser brought a scintillating 80-yard punt return to the house giving Cornell a 27-0 advantage. Late in the third, Princeton decided to attempt a comeback as quarterback Dennis Blake found Adam Ferren for a 36-yard gain. But at the goal line, the defensive line came through again as junior Scott McQuade and senior tri-captain Martin Vogel sacked Blake on third down. "Scott McQuade had [Blake] by the jersey and I was ready to come finish him off but he moved at the last second and I barely got my arm on him," described Vogel. "I thought he got away, but I looked over and he was on the ground." The ensuing field goal was blocked. Princeton finally got on the board late in the fourth quarter when backup quarterback L.T. Lawler found Matt Hall in the right corner of the endzone on a 26-yard beauty. The Red prevailed despite being gained 319-164 yards in total offense and running 24 fewer plays, largely due to the play of the defense, which had three sacks, three recovered-fumbles and three interceptions. The offense recorded a season-high 130 yards on the ground. Cornell now has a week off before playing Navy in the Pride Bowl on October 14. ![Hoping to counter the effects of last week's tragic events, which increased the need for counseling on campus, Gannett: Cornell University Health Services widened the scope of their services to provide the community with additional assistance and psychological care. Counseling services, both individual and group discussion sessions with the Gannett staff, and extended hours have been integral in providing support for the Cornell community. "We have been offering group and individual counseling services for people who want to talk about [the events of last week]," said Sharon Dittman, associate director for community relations at Gannett. According to Dittman, Gannett offered group counseling because there is "often a sense of 'my response seems weird'" during the grieving process, and group counseling contributes to "make people feel less alone." In specific cases, the staff -- composed of social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists -- also provided one-on-one sessions. To accommodate the situation, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) remained open late at Gannett Health Center for the first few days after the attacks. Students had also access to a counselor after-hours, an opportunity of which students have been taking advantage, according to Dittman. Outside of Gannett, "Community support meetings have been scheduled campus-wide and by invitation from certain groups," said Susan H. Murphy '73, vice president for student and academic services. Community support groups met daily in Willard Straight Hall. "These were led by members of the University's community support team," said Tanni Hall, associate dean of students, explaining that the team "consisted of a variety of student services professionals ... including CAPS counselors, dean of students office support staff, Cornell United Religious Work staff, International Students and Scholars Office workers, office of Minority Educational Affairs, Student Academic Support units, Campus Life, etc." If a student group feels the need for assistance, advisors from the support team can provide sessions for that group to help members "grapple with the effects of trauma," Hall said, adding that "crisis managers" were also available for individual support. In residence halls, staff noticed extra sensitivity in the days following the tragedy. "The first night, we had [resident advisors] knock on doors," Murphy said, adding that administrators also "asked residence hall directors to be very present, in case people needed a shoulder to cry on." In addition to services the University provided, "Probably the most sustaining has been the way friends have been watching out for each other," Dittman said.
