After a weekend that saw the women's soccer team fall just short of its third win, the Red heads to Binghamton today to take on a very tough Bearcats squad. The Red is currently stands at 2-1-2, having come up with a 1-1 tie in each of its last two games. On Saturday, the Red could not muster a goal in two overtime sessions against an inspired Stony Brook club that was lucky to sneak out of Ithaca with a tie. The offense has been led by junior co-captain Sarah Olsen who leads the team in goals (2), shots on goal (11), and total points (5). Sophomore forward Alicia Doolittle has also provided offensive firepower for the booters, registering 7 shots in only 3 games played. The defense has been led by backfielders Ellen Daly and Caitlin Ramsey, who have not allowed more than a single goal in any contest this season. However, the biggest story for the Red, thus far, remains the brilliant play of goalkeeper Katie Thomas. Thomas tied a single game Cornell record with 17 saves against Stony Brook on Saturday. She also has registered two shutouts to date, and holds an immaculate .53 goals against average. And did we mention she's only a freshmen? Thomas' effort for the record books this weekend, along with a seven save game against Colgate last Wednesday, did not go unnoticed throughout the league -- Thomas was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week yesterday for her recent excellence. If Thomas is to cash in another shutout tomorrow at Binghamton, she will have to stop Binghamton's fellow frosh-phenom Tatiana Mathlier. The Bearcats star forward was BU's Athlete of the Week last week for scoring two goals in as many games against American and Howard. To date, Mathlier has 5 goals in 6 games, two of which were game-winners. Along with their first year star, Binghamton (5-4-1) boasts 10 returning starters from a squad that went 11-5-1. The game will therefore be an interesting game for a Cornell team that is ready to mount a break-out effort as the heart of their schedule approaches. "This will certainly be a tough game for us," commented head coach Berhane Andeberhan," but it will also be a useful test." Along with a challenging opponent, the Red women will face an additional opponent with which we are all familiar -- the pressures of prelims week. "One game a week is enough...we need some more recovery time," said Andeberhan, "but the pressure of tests and papers has made this week particularly exhausting." The Red has proven itself when their backs have been to the wall and look to do the same tomorrow. A mix of offensive patience and defensive consistency will be called upon as the means to a victorious end The Red springs for its third win, and maybe a little rest in return, at four o'clock today in Binghamton. First game a fluke? Fuhgeddaboutit. The Cornell sprint football team regained some of its swagger, rumbling over Princeton 27-6 en route to its first victory of the season on Saturday. The Red's defensive quickness and power ground game, were simply too much for the Tigers (0-1) to overcome. "We lost some key seniors but this defense is as good if not better than last year," senior tri-captain Martin Vogel noted. "Last year our secondary was the strongest unit, but this year I think it is the line. All of us have played three to four years, and know what needs to be done. When the line is working well it frees up the defense to make big plays without losing coverage from blitzing as much." That Princeton wasn't ready for the Red rush was apparent from the first whistle, when the Tigers' Matt Babinski fumbled the kickoff into his own endzone before saving face with a 15-yard scramble. After a quick three and out, Princeton punter Peter Richter couldn't handle the snap and junior Eric Eisenhart recovered the fumble at the Princeton five yard-line. It only took two plays for sophomore Dean Coccaro to record his first career touchdown on a three-yard scamper up the middle. Coccaro is quickly establishing himself as the team's workhorse, gaining 122 yards in his first two games, including 41 against the Tigers. The rest of the first half saw both defenses display their mettle. On Princeton's ensuing drive, sophomore Matthew Wesley came up with his first career interception while shadowing his receiver along the sideline. Cornell got the ball back on its own 41, and Coccaro then ripped off a 30-yard run around the right tackle. But one play later, the Tiger defense knocked the ball from senior quarterback Sunil Gupta's hands, leading to a turnover. Gupta had a rough outing on his first start at quarterback. He threw an interception inside the Tiger 20-yard line on the next series and finished 2-for-4 for 27 yards. Nonetheless, Princeton's mistakes allowed the Red to pull away. Princeton recorded a 0-yard punt, a quarterback fumble and a 15-yard late hit penalty on consecutive series. The Tigers finished with eight fumbles on the day. "[Our] goal is to put the other team's offense in a hole early by stopping the run and forcing them to have to pass on third and long," Vogel said. "When you are sure a pass is coming it makes it easier for us on the line to rush and make sacks, and for the secondary to make their interceptions." The late-hit penalty left the Red on the Princeton 23-yard line, where junior Charlie Tam turned on the magic. He took a handoff from Gupta and slid left, but quickly ran into his own man. He then bounced back, and took off to his right where there was nothing but Schoellkopf turf in his way, making it 13-0 in favor of Cornell. The Red added two more scores in the third quarter, putting the game out of reach. Tam ran in his second touchdown, setup by a Gupta-to-Ormsby 27-yard pass play, and junior Adam Romeiser brought a scintillating 80-yard punt return to the house giving Cornell a 27-0 advantage. Late in the third, Princeton decided to attempt a comeback as quarterback Dennis Blake found Adam Ferren for a 36-yard gain. But at the goal line, the defensive line came through again as junior Scott McQuade and senior tri-captain Martin Vogel sacked Blake on third down. "Scott McQuade had [Blake] by the jersey and I was ready to come finish him off but he moved at the last second and I barely got my arm on him," described Vogel. "I thought he got away, but I looked over and he was on the ground." The ensuing field goal was blocked. Princeton finally got on the board late in the fourth quarter when backup quarterback L.T. Lawler found Matt Hall in the right corner of the endzone on a 26-yard beauty. The Red prevailed despite being gained 319-164 yards in total offense and running 24 fewer plays, largely due to the play of the defense, which had three sacks, three recovered-fumbles and three interceptions. For years, football's been played on a field. Silly boys. We at The Sun have figured out a much cleaner, much easier solution. Playstation 2: The answer to all our problems. One day last week, while playing some NCAA 2002 on a PS2, three of The Sun's editors had a brilliant idea. Listen up closely, because that doesn't happen too often. Instead of actually filtering through books and books of statistics to decide who will come out on top in the Ivy League this year, we're going to let EA Sports do it for us. Our gaming formula was simple enough. We ran through 10 simulations of the Ivy League season. After a couple bags of Tostitos and a few cases of Corona, here's what we came up with. (OK, we'll actually tell you what we think too, stats included): 1. Pennsylvania 2000 Record: 7-3, 6-1 Ivy Returning lettermen: 42 The Good: There aren't too many people right now that would go against Penn for the Ivy League title this year. Here's why: Gavin Hoffman. A transfer from Northwestern, he was the Ivy League Player of the Year last season as a junior while passing for 3,214 yards and 24 TDs. Thanks to him, the Quakers were first in D I-AA in passing (342.7 yards per game). Hoffman probably could carry the Quakers by himself. But the bad news for the rest of the League is that he won't have to. Seventeen other starters from 2000 are back with him. Most prominent on that list is running back Kris Ryan, who despite being hurt for much of the season, ran for 683 yards and eight TDs. Against Cornell, he had his best performance of the year, gaining 243 yards on the ground. And in 1999, when he was healthy, Ryan led the Ivy League with 1,197 yards and was a unanimous choice for conference first-team. If that wasn't enough, the Quakers also return their top receiver (Rob Milanese) and their entire starting offensive line. And even though Penn probably won't even have to field a defense, it sports possibly the most experienced and deepest one in the league. The Bad: None...seriously, we are all screwed. The Ugly: See the bad. NCAA 2002: 1st (47-23) 2. Harvard: 2000 Record: 5-5, 4-3 Ivy Returning lettermen: 36 The Good: Not too many weaknesses on this year's Harvard team. In senior Neil Rose, the Crimson has arguably one of the top QBs in the League. He holds most of the school's passing records and last year was ranked ninth in Division I-AA in total offense. Behind him will be a running unit that took top honors in the Ivies in 2000 with almost 180 yards per game. Now both juniors, rushers Nick Palazzo and Matt Leisler will look to keep Harvard at the top. The quality doesn't drop much at the wide receiver level either: junior Carl Morris (60 receptions last year), senior Sam Taylor (36), classmate Dan Farley (24) and Sean Meeker (16) give the Crimson one of deepest crews in the conference. On defense, Harvard returns nine starters from a group that was best in the league in stopping the run. It should be anchored by sophomore linebacker Dante Balestracci, who was both Ivy Rookie of the Year and a selection to the all-conference First-Team. And to boot, he's a preseason All-American this year. The Bad: The chinks in the team's armor could be its offensive line, which lost three-year starter Mike Clare to graduation, and also its kicking game, which saw now sophomore Robbie Wright connect on only 3 of 8 field goal attempts last year. The Ugly: Harvard got beat out by Princeton in U.S. News & World Report. Ha ha. NCAA 2002: 2nd (46-24) 3. Brown: 2000 Record: 7-3, 4-3 Ivy Returning lettermen: 40 The Good: Yea! Brown's off probation. After being disqualified from the title race last year for less than savvy donations by boosters, the Bears are back. And hopefully, their alums learned a thing or two about giving (il)legally. Cornell should be quite familiar with what Brown can do on offense. After all, the Bears did put up 56 points against the Red last season. While most Ivy teams find success through the air, Brown's strength this season lies in its ground game. Returning senior All-Ivy tailback Michael Malan racked up 1,213 yards last year (243 of them coming at Cornell's expense). And with the help of All-Ivy fullback Michael Borgonizi, there's no reason why he won't put up similar numbers in 2001. Don't underestimate its receiving crew, though. Junior Chas Gessner was named honorable mention All-American last year with 52 catches. At 6-5, 210, he'll surely give short Ivy cornerbacks a slew of nightmares. Defensively, junior safety Bobby Parisien and senior linebacker Uwa Airhiavbere, both honorable mention All-Ivy last year, should give Brown a strong foundation. The Bad: Sean Jensen will once again have to be responsible for both the place kicking and punting duties. That could get weird. The Ugly: Brown must really hate graduation ceremonies by now. Just take a look at who the Bears lost to the real world. Eric Webber, the number one passer in the nation last year. All-American Stephen Campbell, who set the D I-AA record with 120 catches in 2000. And All-American tackle Drew Inzer. The QB situation may be a bit murky this year -- head coach Phil Estes has to choose between senior Kyle Rowley and sophomore Nathan Poole -- but the Bears should still be able to steamroll most teams with their offense. NCAA 2002: 6th (31-39) 4. Cornell: 2000 Record: 5-5, 5-2 Ivy Returning lettermen: 36 Have you read the last 10 pages? Cuz, that might give you a bit of clue. NCAA 2002: 3rd (40-30) 4. Yale: 2000 Record: 7-3, 4-3 Ivy Returning lettermen: 36 The Good: Back for Yale is senior quarterback Peter Lee, who threw every single pass for the Bulldogs last season and holds many of the school's passing records. That's about it though. They do have an alum in the White House, if that's any consolation. The Bad: When your top two receivers, your top running back, three of your starting defensive linemen, two of your starting linebackers, three of your defensive backs, both your kickers and your top punt returners are gone due to graduation, it's not a good sign. Yale will be very young this year, and will have to expect yeoman's work from quarterback Lee. The problem is, if he doesn't have anyone to pass the ball to or anyone to at least hand it off to, Yale can say hello to the Ivy League basement. The Ugly: Well, first of all, no starting offensive lineman weighs more than 300 pounds. The biggest one should be Kyle Mettzler at 280. Then there's that whole bit about becoming the second winningest school in college football. Sure, Michigan's loss two weeks ago to Washington kept it from moving above Yale on that list. They may be tied at 806, but sooner or later, Yale's going down. NCAA 2002: 7th (30-40) 6. Princeton: 2000 Record: 3-7, 3-4 Ivy Returning lettermen: 36 The Good: Princeton's dismal record from last year is awfully deceptive. Six of its games happened to be decided by seven points or less. Fans at Schoellkopf last season should remember the Tigers nipping at Cornell's
heels late in the fourth quarter. Only place kicker Taylor Northrop's slip on the wet field on a point after attempt prevented Princeton from forcing the game into overtime. What's going to make or break the Tigers' season in 2001 is their quarterback situation: they have too many of them. Head coach Roger Hughes can call on three signal callers: David Splithoff, Tommy Crenshaw and Brian Danielewicz. As of now, it looks like Splithoff will take most of the snaps. But the way Hughes manages the situation and maximizes the productivity at the position will be a telling factor in where the team finishes. Princeton's kicking game at least should be in the safe hands (or feet) of Northrop who was 14-of-18 on field goal tries last year. The Bad: The defense is quite young, and it could only record a total of 12 sacks last year. The Ugly: Princeton's in New Jersey. NCAA 2002: 4th (33-37) 7. Dartmouth: 2000 Record: 2-8, 1-6 Ivy Returning lettermen: 33 The Good: The Green should be very deep at wide receiver this year. Senior Damien Roomets had 43 catches in just six games (a campus disciplinary action robbed him of the other four) in 2000. Classmate Matt DeLellis and sophomore Jay Barnard also chipped in with 39 and 40 receptions, respectively. At running back, Dartmouth has a two-headed monster, composed of Michael Gratch (513 yards last year) and Aaron Pumerantz (377 in just six games). On the other side of the ball, senior linebacker Matt Mercer, who was first-team All-Ivy last season, is also back. He recorded an astounding 113 tackles last year, 75 of them solo. Another plus is the Green tall defensive backs. With all of the starters around 6-0, Dartmouth will at least have a fair chance at containing the Ivy League's numerous gunslingers. The Bad: The loss of the graduated Caleb Moore, All-Ivy guard, leaves a hug gap in the offensive line. Whether the Green can patch it up and give its quarterback some breathing room will be key. Ah, the quarterback situation. Last year saw now seniors Greg Smith and Brian Mann split duty. Theoretically, Smith has won the starting role, but don't be surprised to see a shared status as the season progresses. The Ugly: Dartmouth averaged the least number of points per game last year in the Ivy League (23.1) and the gave up most number of points per game (38.8). That should be fun for the scoreboard operator in Hanover (wherever that is). NCAA 2002: 8th (21-49) 8. Columbia: 2000 Record: 3-7, 1-6 Ivy Returning lettermen: 31 The Good: The Lions' offense should start and stop with tailback Jonathan Reese. His numbers speak for themselves: last year, he ran for 1,330 yards and averaged another 36.8 on kick returns. Quite good... The Bad: ...too bad the rest of the team's not. Breaking the Mold: Netflix's Jessica Jones

Head coach Tim Pendergast had a clear vision of what his future would be. As a high school student in Syracuse, N.Y. he became obsessed by the lifestyle of a well-known coach from a rival district and immediately modeled himself after that coach. "There was a very successful high school basketball coach in the town I lived in. He worked for Niagara Mohawk," Pendergast describes. "He wore a suit and tie to work everyday. During the basketball season, he was the coach of the basketball team. "That's what I wanted to be: I wanted to be into business and find someone who would let me leave at three o'clock to coach basketball," he reminisced. From an early age Pendergast saw his adulthood spent in an amalgamation of business and basketball. His goal was to be successful in both spheres: the office and the court. In doing that, he would be happy. In his high school years, Pendergast was a multi-varsity athlete lettering at Bishop Grimes High School in football, basketball, track and lacrosse. His first love was basketball, but he also had a natural aptitude for football. He went to SUNY Cortland, initially recruited as a quarterback but changed position to defensive back his sophomore year, feeling it was the best way to maximize his playing time while being most helpful to the team. As far as academics, Pendergast entered his freshman year with every intention of majoring in economics and minoring in physical education. His plan lasted for three semesters as he studied GNPs and budget deficits, while taking biology and anatomy classes on the side. It was the end of his second year when he decided the suffering he was putting himself through was not worth it. "I couldn't see myself behind a desk all day," he candidly stated. On the other hand he confessed, "I dreaded the thought of becoming a high school gym teacher, but I knew that I wanted to coach." Left with a partially completed track in physical education and economics, Pendergast had to make a career decision and make it soon. Then came a revelation. "I woke up one morning and said I wanted to be a football coach," he said. Pendergast let go of his long-time dream, of what his college education had been geared towards on a whim -- a whim that turned out to be well-founded. Part of the decision to stick with football came from the lack of closure Pendergast felt after an unsuccessful senior year. "We had a lousy, lousy team. we won one game. I was not going to quit on that note," Pendergast said, promising himself, "Doggone, I'm going to be a football coach." After graduating in 1980, Pendergast headed straight into coaching. The same year he became Ithaca College's freshman defensive coordinator and assistant track coach, as he began graduate studies in physical science at I.C. He jumped over from South Hill to East Hill every consecutive year after, acting as a graduate assistant in 1981, head freshman coach in 1982 and secondary coach in 1983. He finished his studies at I.C. in 1986, and returned briefly to Cornell to help recruit in 1989. Afterwards, Pendergast moved around the college football scene, taking the wide receiver coaching position at Northwestern in 1990. He next went to University of Maine coaching the secondary for two seasons. In 1993 he went south to James Madison University and took on more responsibility as its defensive coordinator. He was there until 1997 when he gained a more prominent position as the University of Memphis' assistant coach and recruiting coordinator moving from secondary coach to wide receiver coach. Last year, though, Pendergast won his first head coaching position at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y where he steered the team to a 2-8 record. When Pete Mangurian resigned as Cornell's head coach last winter, Pendergast was one of the first names to find its way on to Athletic Director Andy Noel's list. It wasn't long after that Pendergast, his wife and two sons were relocating to Ithaca, a town that he knows well. Hoping to counter the effects of last week's tragic events, which increased the need for counseling on campus, Gannett: Cornell University Health Services widened the scope of their services to provide the community with additional assistance and psychological care. Counseling services, both individual and group discussion sessions with the Gannett staff, and extended hours have been integral in providing support for the Cornell community. "We have been offering group and individual counseling services for people who want to talk about [the events of last week]," said Sharon Dittman, associate director for community relations at Gannett. According to Dittman, Gannett offered group counseling because there is "often a sense of 'my response seems weird'" during the grieving process, and group counseling contributes to "make people feel less alone." In specific cases, the staff -- composed of social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists -- also provided one-on-one sessions. To accommodate the situation, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) remained open late at Gannett Health Center for the first few days after the attacks. Students had also access to a counselor after-hours, an opportunity of which students have been taking advantage, according to Dittman. Outside of Gannett, "Community support meetings have been scheduled campus-wide and by invitation from certain groups," said Susan H. Murphy '73, vice president for student and academic services. Community support groups met daily in Willard Straight Hall. "These were led by members of the University's community support team," said Tanni Hall, associate dean of students, explaining that the team "consisted of a variety of student services professionals ... including CAPS counselors, dean of students office support staff, Cornell United Religious Work staff, International Students and Scholars Office workers, office of Minority Educational Affairs, Student Academic Support units, Campus Life, etc." If a student group feels the need for assistance, advisors from the support team can provide sessions for that group to help members "grapple with the effects of trauma," Hall said, adding that "crisis managers" were also available for individual support. In residence halls, staff noticed extra sensitivity in the days following the tragedy. "The first night, we had [resident advisors] knock on doors," Murphy said, adding that administrators also "asked residence hall directors to be very present, in case people needed a shoulder to cry on." In addition to services the University provided, "Probably the most sustaining has been the way friends have been watching out for each other," Dittman said. It seems that the only thing Stephen Herek's Rock Star offers is an opportunity at stardom for the many unknowns which happen to comprise the majority of the cast. Were I any of them, I wouldn't hold my breath for instant fame; Rock Star is an average film, and, with its mediocre performances and regurgitated plot, as easily forgettable as its generically simplistic title. Chris Coles (Mark Wahlberg) is a zealous fan of rock-and-roll band Steel Dragon, so rabid in his adoration that he plays in a cover band and demands its members to play Steel Dragon's music to perfection. This attitude soon leads to Chris' elimination from the group, and he's left to make music on his own with the support of his girlfriend/manager Emily (Jennifer Aniston). And then, one morning Chris gets the opportunity of a lifetime -- an offer to replace the lead singer of Steel Dragon. He flies out to L.A. with Emily in tow, meets his idols, and soon begins to live the life of a rock star, savoring the ups of worldwide fame while Emily endures the downs of being the girlfriend of an international icon. The couple must cope with their dichotomous experiences if they want to remain together, while the audience must cope with the inevitable outcome that they probably will. The major problem with Rock Star is that it's nothing new. The plot is wholly predictable; there are no twists or turns. And yet while relying on so much predigested material, it's still hard to tell what kind of movie Rock Star aims to be. While there are a few humorous moments, there aren't enough to qualify it as a comedy (although it's funnier than most films I've seen which have been classified in that genre), nor does the manner in which the plot is carried out really lend itself to such a label. And if Rock Star is indeed intended to be an overall dramatic piece, then any weight the film hopes to convey is nullified by the series of outtakes accompanying the first minutes of the closing credits. The wishy-washy character of Rock Star resonates with the audience more than the plot itself does. With Rock Star, Mark Wahlberg continues to portray typical wide-eyed innocents who have just been initiated into worlds they have only heard or dreamed about. He did this superbly in 1997's Boogie Nights, as the well-endowed neophyte Eddie "Dirk Diggler" Adams, on the brink of a successful career in adult film. Wahlberg is good here too, but one cannot help but wonder if he is slowly but surely -- despite films such as The Perfect Storm or Planet of the Apes -- limiting himself to such a role. When one considers the many similarities between Boogie Nights and Rock Star -- including the time period, among other things -- one wonders whether Wahlberg is attempting to carve himself some sort of safety niche. Aniston is adequate as the girlfriend Emily, save the fact that, in reality, she appears a bit too old for the role (their ages are never revealed, but presumably Chris and his girlfriend are in their early 20s). Still Aniston succeeds in distancing herself from her role as Rachel on Friends and makes the role of Emily a believable one. It's unusual and worth noting, again, that that with the exception of stars Wahlberg and Aniston, all other actors appearing in Rock Star are unfamiliar Hollywood faces (the 1960's Batmobile excluded). This level of anonymity may have been used to lend a certain level of realism and credibility to the picture; if so, it doesn't entirely succeed because of Wahlberg and Aniston's presence. Rock Star is a rehash, plain and simple. It's as if Herek merely merged the plot of the aforementioned Boogie Nights with that of 2000's Almost Famous and came up with something that takes from both without offering anything new of its own.Archived article by Adam Cooper

It was 6:45, the U.S. Open men's semifinals held some allure (although Sampras was spanking Safin), next week's class readings weren't any more appealing, and nothing was going on for at least three hours -- more likely four. Yet I had tentatively promised to stop by the men's soccer game against Colgate. Rather than subjecting myself to complete boredom, I decided to try my luck with the game. I took my student ID and walked up to Berman Field, thereby guaranteeing that I would be casually late and sure to find at least one of The Sun's men's soccer beat writers. When I reached the field it was 7:18, and there was 33:47 left in the first half. Not only could I not find any of the beat writers, I couldn't even find a seat! After walking the length of the bleachers and half way back, I finally recognized a familiar face. As I maneuvered to where my friends were sitting, they even had to scootch over so I could get both cheeks on the bench. Eventually I had to move down a row to avoid asphyxiation. How did this happen? Yes, Cornell has a pretty decent soccer team; yes, it was a nice day; yes, it was a convenient time. But I had gone to games in the past under similar conditions, when claustrophobics could have attended without any fear and where you only scootched over if you spilled your drink. Cornell's graduating class of 2001 followed career paths which did not include medical school last year, reflecting a nationwide trend of four straight years of declining interest in the field. Applications to the nation's medical schools fell 3.7 percent in 2000, a percentage also mirrored among Cornell applicants. Exact numbers for University undergraduates were not available in time for publication. Attractive jobs in dot-coms and information technology, along with the prospect of big medical school debts, may be among the reasons for the decline, said Barbara Barzansky, secretary of the American Medical Association's (AMA) medical education council and author of the study. Add the increased paperwork, regulations and concerns that have come with managed care and, she said, ''it's not as friendly an environment as it used to be.'' Judy Jensvold, the senior associate director of health careers at Cornell and one of the advisors of pre-med undergraduates, agreed that applications to medical school may be tied to the economy. "There will always be people who go to medical school no matter what," she said. "Then there are some people who say, maybe if I can get a terrific job, I won't go to medical school right away." The decline appears to be leveling off; it was 6 percent in 1999. Karin S. Ash, director of Career Services at Cornell, expects to see a turnaround in terms of the number of people applying to medical schools. "When the economy goes down, everyone goes back to school," she said, noting that many students previously took of advantage of the opportunity to make quick money in the financial services sector. "It always goes in cycles." In addition, she said, more high school students are applying to college than ever before which may also help boost applications to medical schools. Jensvold, however, did not expect to see an instant spike because the economic downturn is still a relatively-recent occurrence. "These things aren't an immediate reaction. There's an echo effect," she said. The applicant pool last year totaled 37,092. It included 17,274 women, a 0.9 percent drop from 1999, the report found. The number of minorities climbed 2 percent to 4,266. At Cornell's Joan and Sanford I. Weill Medical School in Manhattan, applications also fell to 6,344 in the fall of 2000, according to U.S. News and World Report. However, the acceptance was still a mere 3.5 percent for this year's class, which was made up of 101 students. Officials at the medical school were not immediately available for comment. Despite the drop in applicants, ''there are still more than twice as many applicants as there are places'' for them, said Dr. Jordan Cohen, president of the Association of American Medical Colleges. The recent decline in applications may, however, mean good news for pre-med undergraduates -- but only slightly. In 1989, when applications to medical school were at their record lowest, the acceptance rate for Cornell students who desired to go to medical school was 90 percent. This number dropped to 55 percent in 1996 when applications were at their record high. The current decline began in 1997, and in 1999, the Cornell acceptance rate was 70 percent. Jensvold noted that although deans of medical school are always concerned about a drop in applications, she added, "It's a pretty soft drop; it's not a precipitous drop." Considering the thousands of applicants who compete for about 100 seats at any medical school, a three percent drop isn't a cause for alarm, according to Ash. "They turn away people with 4.0 GPAs," she said. The AMA report, published in today's Journal of the American Medical Association, also found that the number of patients available to participate in clinical teaching during 2000-01 decreased in almost half the nation's 125 medical schools. Some experts say managed care is partly to blame. Insurance companies may be steering patients away from teaching hospitals because the care there can be more expensive, Barzansky said. The shortage may help explain the results of two other new studies in the same journal that suggest that some medical schools may not be adequately preparing students to deal with common problems and procedures. One study, by Massachusetts General Hospital researchers and based on a 1998 survey of 2,626 students completing their residency assignments nationwide, found that more than one in 10 felt unprepared to handle certain treatments and procedures. Medical school typically lasts four years, followed by three to seven years of residency. Training in handling ''nontraditional patients'' such as those with AIDS, drug abuse and chronic pain was cited as particularly deficient. ''Teaching hospitals and medical schools need to provide residents with quality training that reflects the diversity of the patients they will one day treat,'' said Dr. David Blumenthal, the study author. The other study found a serious inability to perform an abdominal exam among first-year residents in internal medicine and pediatrics at two New York medical institutions. The study involved 148 graduates of U.S. medical schools and 35 from foreign schools and measured how many of 13 procedures each student performed in an exam on a young adult patient. Well over half the foreign students did all the procedures, which included exposing the abdomen, inspecting it and squeezing it to feel the liver, kidneys and spleen. Fewer than 10 percent of the U.S. grads performed nine of the 13 procedures, according to researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Downstate Children's Medical Center. Barzansky said her report found that 58 percent of the schools are undergoing major curriculum changes, with many trying to focus more on small-group learning and hands-on work in the community instead of traditional lectures. Cornell's nuclear research reactor, the last of its kind in New York and one of only 26 left in the country, will soon hit the graveyard, further endangering a rare technology in an era when nuclear engineering is on the rise. The Board of Trustees voted unanimously last summer to decommission the reactor and close the Ward Center for Nuclear Studies, according to Henrik N. Dullea '61, vice president for University relations. Heated controversy met the decision, which had been requested by President Hunter R. Rawlings III and recommended by a special faculty oversight committee. The decision to decommission the reactor had been rejected by the full Faculty Senate under the grounds that the center provides "a diverse array of service to the Cornell community and beyond." Alumni and industry users had also addressed inflammatory responses to the administration. And about 20 undergraduates were gathered outside Day Hall to present a petition with 200 signatures opposing the closure. Despite these efforts and the announcement of a $250,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to help save the reactor and make it financially independent from the University, the reactor is scheduled to shut down on June 30, 2002. Three major rule changes are in effect for the upcoming Ivy League volleyball season. First, and to the chagrin of some of the Ivy coaches, there will be a whole new way that the teams will play out their fall schedules. Last season the Red faced each of its Ancient Eight foes once during the conference season. The postseason conference tournament followed, sending the eventual champion to the NCAA tournament. Instead of only having one opportunity to stuff Princeton this year, the Red will have two opportunites during the in-conference regular season. This double round robin format, in conjunction with the axing of the season-ending tournament, will intensify the in-conference matches and leave less room for error. In past seasons, a team could drop a match to an opponent and then have the opportunity to exact revenge in the tournament. Nevermore, says the majority vote amongst the Ivy League Athletic Directors, who voted this all into effect this year. "This season will present a whole new set of challenges," said coach Christie Jackson. Remember the number two right? The second change has to do with rally scoring. Fifteen points used to determine the victor of a set and now... you guessed it, thirty points is the new mark. Jackson speculated, "All of these rule changes might be in effort to make the matches more television friendly." The third rule change makes the net serve kosher for play. In the past, if a serve coming over the net touched any part of the net cord and still managed to fall on the other side, the point was replayed. Now those instances are good for live play. F is for Fake: Welles Explores Truth in Deception

The Cornell Forensics Society has a long-standing tradition of excellence, and this year's team is no exception. After a long year full of daily practices and weekend (sometimes week-long) competitions, the team finally closed out the year with their last events and is now reflecting on their accomplishments. The Cornell Forensics Society, consisting of roughly 40 members, is subdivided into speech and debate teams and is an opportunity for students with all levels of skill and experience to compete in intercollegiate speech and debate tournaments across the nation, according to the team's website. This year alone, the students collectively attended over 40 conferences around the nation. According to Parichay Rudina '00, the team's Director of Rhetoric Scholarship Laboratory, "Traveling was one of the best parts of the forensics experience. We've been to numerous schools all around the nation this year." After spending four years as a member on Cornell's team, Rudina decided to stick around and coach for the speech side of the team. "This year has been ridiculously fun,' Rudina said. "A lot of our more experienced members graduated last year, so we were left with a very new, young team. They all really stepped up and brought new energy to the team. It's been a great challenge for all of us and a wonderful learning experience." The changeover did not seem to affect the team's legacy of excellent competition, though. The debate team ranked ninth in the nation in the CEDA division and eighth in the National Debate Tournament division. The speech team ranked 17th in the nation in the American Forensics Association division and seventh in the National Forensics Association in their division. In addition, Steve Zammit '01, who recently won first place at the American Forensics Association National Individual Events Tournament, took home first place again, this time at the National Forensics Association Individual Events Tournament. He is the fifth person ever to win both national events in the same year and the second from Cornell. "The level of experience in our group is very diverse this year," said Jethro Hayman, director of forensics. "We have people from all different backgrounds competing in all different levels. After a year together, both teams have grown significantly in maturity and skill and are much more seasoned." Students on the Cornell Forensics Society teams spend countless hours throughout the year preparing for their events. "It really is a daily involvement," said Tzvetana Tochkov '03, a member of the debate team. "But I find that after the work we do with debate, classwork is actually much more enjoyable. Taking notes in lectures becomes a nice break from the intense reading, writing and quick-thinking in debate." With the end of yet another successful year, the team is anxious for the future. "Speech and debate is really becoming a global phenomenon," said Hayman. "The one thing the public fears more than death is public speaking. For this reason, we really are a secret society. Things like being able to break down the quality of an argument and the ability to think and respond quickly are such advantageous skills. These are skills you will use for the rest of your life."
