This past weekend, field hockey took on Brown University (5-3, 2-1 Ivy) in Providence, Rhode Island. In an intense battle, the Red ended its season winning streak with a 1-3 loss.
The Bears took the lead immediately with a goal in the first 55 seconds of the game. The Red would quickly strike back, also scoring in the first quarter to tie the game 1-1. However, the Bears were able to hold off a potential comeback, scoring again in the second and fourth quarters to secure the ultimate victory.
Overall, the Bears outshot the Red 15-12 and led in penalty corners 7-5. Cornell senior goalkeeper Jane McNally recorded a career-best seven saves to keep the competition close.
While the loss to Brown broke its winning streak, field hockey came back with two wins over the weekend. The Red took on the Bryant University Bulldogs on Saturday, coming away with a 4-1 victory on the road. The Red outshot the Bulldogs 19-2 and dominated in penalty corners 12-3.
Field hockey closed out the weekend at home with a 6-0 victory against Long Island University on Monday. Overall, the Red earned a 34-6 advantage in shots, won 17 penalty corners and featured 6 different goal scorers throughout this game. The Red’s record now stands at 8-1, 2-1 Ivy League.
Reflecting on the Red’s overall performance last weekend, head coach Andy Smith emphasized the importance of tightening the team’s offense moving forward.
“We need to score more goals,” Smith said. “We took 35 shots on Monday, 35 shots on Sunday, and 15 shots on Friday, and we’ve only scored 11 goals. We should have doubled that amount this weekend.”
Despite the minor setback, field hockey remains confident to take on the competition ahead. Next up, the Red will host Harvard on Oct. 11 and Lehigh University on Oct. 12. All the action will be available on ESPN+.
