On Friday, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country spent the evening at Moakley Course for their season opener against SUNY Cortland. The Red delivered an exciting start to the season as it dominated Cortland on the men’s and women’s sides.
The men picked up all top five spots in their race, winning with a perfect team score of 15 to Cortland’s 50. Junior Pierre Attiogbe led the charge, finishing first by over six seconds with a time of 15:28.1.
Junior Aryan Abbaraju, senior Tyler Canaday and freshman Griffin Mandirola finished second, third and fourth respectively. The trio remarkably crossed the line within one-tenth of a second, each coming in at a time of 15:34.2.
Junior James Glebocki finished the race not far behind with a time of 15:34.5, coming in fifth place and capping off the clean sweep for Cornell.
The women also delivered a perfect team performance, taking the top five finishes and winning by a score of 15-50. Senior Mairead Clas cleared the competition for the top spot, coming in at a time of 18:29.7. Sophomore Tenley Nelson finished second with a time of 18:31.6, and junior Maisie McManus placed third coming in at 18:35.4.
Finally, the pair of sophomores Hannah Kersten and Bronwyn Parks fourth and fifth respectively, coming in with times of 18:38.2 and 18:44.3 to complete another sweep for the Red.
With an exhilarating opener under its belt, Cornell will look to continue to showcase its speed and depth as the season goes on. Cornell’s next opportunity will come on Friday, October 3 at 9 a.m. when the men’s and women’s teams will travel to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania for the Paul Short Invitational.
