Field hockey took to Barton Hall this Saturday to face off against the Colgate Raiders, emerging victorious in their opening game of the season.
While the Raiders originally took the lead, the Red made a strong comeback later in the match. For the first two quarters, the teams were tied 0-0. In the third quarter, the Raiders scored first to earn the first lead of the game.
The Red came back strong, scoring two goals 56 seconds apart, securing the lead for the rest of the match. The Red ultimately defeated the Raiders 2-1.
Cornell has historically had the upper hand in this matchup, leading the series 30–23–3 after defeating Colgate 4–0 on the road last season. This year’s victory marks the Red’s ninth consecutive victory over the Raiders.
Among other game highlights, the Red shot 24 times at Colgate’s goalkeeper — the most since 2023, when they sent 38 shots. The Red outshot the Raiders 24-6 and earned nine penalty corners while Colgate only earned six.
This victory is only the beginning, as the field hockey team has much else to look forward to in the coming season. On Friday, the Red will host the Mercyhurst Lakers for the first time ever. Then on Sunday, the Red will travel to Philadelphia to face the La Salle Explorers for the teams’ second-ever meeting. Afterward, the Red will launch into Ivy League games, with its conference opener against Columbia on Sept. 19.
