TCAT Reduces Service Due to Overheating Buses

Reading time: about 1 minutes

TCAT will reduce its busing services starting Tuesday amid the ongoing record-breaking heatwave in Tompkins County, according to a TCAT press release. The reduced services may last until Wednesday. Frequent routes like the 10, 30, 81 and 82 will be prioritized as the reduced service continues.

Bus riders can use online sites like BusTracker and the MyStop app to check real-time bus routes and plan their commutes.

Amid temperatures in the 90s, multiple TCAT buses overheated or experienced air-conditioning systems failure on Monday, according to TCAT. These buses had to be switched out due to the heating issues.

Tompkins County is currently under heat advisory by the National Weather Service due to extreme temperatures in the 90s and heat index values, or “feels-like” temperatures, exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the NWS. The heat advisory will last until Wednesday at 8 p.m.

In its press release, TCAT wrote that it “apologizes for any inconvenience” and urges riders to be aware of local health guidance as the heat advisory persists.
