Women’s Rowing Falls to Brown in Race for the Dunn Bowl

Reading time: about 1 minutes

The Cornell University - Brown University regatta, one of the oldest regattas in the Ivy league, was officially coined The Dunn Bowl in 1973. Ever since then, the two schools have battled annually for the trophy, and the Bears have taken it home every single time. Last Friday, Women’s Rowing travelled to Providence, Rhode Island, for this year's Dunn Bowl face-off, looking to break the Bears’ winning streak. Although the Red fell to the Bears in all six races, they put up valiant efforts against a strong opponent and some tedious racing conditions.

The regatta, ordinally scheduled for Saturday morning, had to be moved to Friday evening to accommodate for predicted inclement weather. This meant the Red had to race on their travel day. The six races of the day featured the Varsity 8, 2V8, 3V8, Varsity 4, 2V4, and 3V4. The Bears finished first in the Varsity 8, clocking a 6:48.5 time. The Red followed up behind, clocking a 7:08.7. In the 3V4, the Bears finished first with an 8:56.6 time, and the Red finished second with a 9:13.0 time.

Head coach Steve Coppola said the weather played a large role in the outcome of the race.

“The biggest thing is that we had two opponents,” Coppola said. “We had Brown, and we had the conditions.”

Throughout the duration of the regatta, the teams fought against stiff headwinds. While the Varsity 8 raced at high tide, the rest of the races were held against a choppy, incoming current.

“That creates a scenario where the conditions end up being an additional opponent that you have to face,” Coppola said.

Despite last week’s loss, Coach Coppola is excited to see what the women will accomplish this weekend at the IRA Women’s Sprint Championship in Worcester, Massachusetts.
