Although Spring Break is just around the corner, the women’s lacrosse team stops for nothing. Under head coach Jenny Graap, the Red will take on the Harvard crimson tomorrow at 12 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass. The last time these two teams met was last spring, when Harvard won, 11-7, at Cornell. The Red seeks to give the Crimson a taste of its own medicine as Cornell seeks to defeat its Ivy rival at Harvard’s home stadium. Aside from the factor of the Red wanting revenge, another key aspect to this pivotal match-up is that Cornell (2-3) defeated Columbia for its first Ivy League win last weekend, creating the basis for a hope of no defeat in this league. Harvard (2-3) is 0-1 in the Ivy League so far, having suffered a tough loss to Penn, 16-6.

Cornell is also coming off a loss from this weekend. Following the victory over Columbia, the Red took on the women of Loyola. The Red lost, 11-9, to the No. 17 Greyhounds. Sophomore attacker Jessi Steinberg, sophomore midfielder Shannon McHugh and sophomore midfielder Katie Kirk each racked up two goals, while junior tri-captain attacker and midfielder Libby Johnson was marked down for one goal and two assists. Sophomore attacker/midfielder Olivia Knotts and freshman midfielder Lauren Halpern also contributed a goal apiece for Cornell. Despite the Red’s valiant effort, however, Loyola pulled ahead and won the game.

“It was close,” said freshman center Morgan Axenfeld of the Loyola game. “But we’re excited for Harvard this weekend. We lost to them last year and they have a very strong lineup with a lot of good freshmen, but we definitely have a shot.”

Along with the defeat by Penn, Harvard is coming off of a tough loss to Boston University, who defeated the Crimson, 13-9 at Cumnock field last Wednesday. The Terriers began with an 8-1 lead –– a lead they maintained, though with not as large of a margin, throughout the remainder of the game to defeat Harvard.

After facing Harvard tomorrow afternoon, the Red will travel to Florida where it will take on the Gators on their home turf on the Sunday concluding Spring Break. In contrast to Cornell’s long history of lacrosse, the Gators make up a new team in the league. Axenfeld said this could be a tough match-up for Cornell.

“They’re a new team so they’re also a young team. We definitely have the edge on them in terms of experience,” Axenfeld said. “On the other hand, they get all the top recruits so they’re going to be very good.”
