After splitting another two games this week, the women’s basketball team is holding an even 3-3 record. On Tuesday night in Newman Arena, Cornell notched a 73-57 victory against IUPUI, but then fell, 80-55, to Albany yesterday on the road.

IUPUI (0-4) proved to be a worthy opponent for the Red, especially throughout the first half of the game. Though the Red emerged from the first half shooting 40 percent, the Jaguars managed to shoot 48.3 percent from the floor. The score was kept essentially dead even for the entire first half, except for a four-point Jaguar lead in the final minutes. However, Cornell was quick to respond and the Red went into halftime tied with the Jaguars at 32.

In the second half, Cornell gradually began to pull away, due largely in part to an aggressive approach and a 36-28 rebound edge in favor of the Red. An especially impressive performance was put on by senior guard Virginia McMunigal, whose 3-point shooting was a major asset to the Red’s offense. With her seven 3-pointers, McMunigal went into the Cornell record books as having the second most 3-pointers in a single game for the Red. In addition to her 7-of-8 3-point record, McMunigal scored a career high 26 points.

McMunigal was not the only one to perform well on Tuesday night. Senior guard Lauren Benson contributed 13 points and seven assists, sophomore forward Christine Vlasic had 11 points and freshman Clare Fitzpatrick finished with 10 points. Fierce!: Senior guard Virginia McMunigal (4) looks to pass against Ithaca on Nov. 15. McMunigal scored a career-high 26 points against IUPUI, including seven threes.

However, it seems that the momentum from Tuesday’s win did not carry over into yesterday’s matchup with Albany. The Red hit the road only to be thwarted by the Great Danes (3-2) in a game that saw a severe downturn in Cornell’s shooting performance.

Cornell got off to a promising start in the first half, taking an early 12-point lead over Albany. Moreover, the Red shot a solid 43.5 percent throughout the first 20 minutes, keeping things tight between the two teams. Nevertheless, the Great Danes managed to close the half on a strong 14-3 run, leaving the Red in a 30-27 deficit. From there, things only continued to go downhill for Cornell.

While the Great Danes stepped up their shooting from 38.2 to 48.3 percent in the second half, the Red’s shooting plummeted to 28.6 percent. In addition, Cornell went 2-for-9 in its 3-point attempts, compared to Albany’s 5-of-8 effort.

The Cornell squad had one exception to the night’s poor shooting performance: Allie Fedorowicz. The senior guard matched her career high with 25 points — she hit 8-of-14 shots, going 6-of-9 from behind the arc. Fedorowicz was the only Cornell player to score in double digits.

Despite Fedorowicz’s outstanding shooting, the Red never recovered from its slide in the first half, and Albany easily coasted to the victory.

Cornell will next take on Colgate on Dec. 3 hoping that yesterday was just a slip-up.
