The wrestling team is used to winning. They are used to winning because, in all honesty, that’s what they do best. You can see it in the face of head coach Rob Koll when he talks about this team, his team. He has faith in these young men; this team, his team. They will win, he says. How does he know this? He just knows.
The Red has not lost the Ivy League title in seven seasons. Cornell finished last season with an impressive 12-2 dual record, without losing once in its last seven matches en route to the EIWAs — which Cornell won — and the NCAA championships — where current senior Troy Nickerson capped his perfect, 25-0 season record with a national title at 125 pounds.
Joining Nickerson are four other All-Americans and six NCAA qualifiers.
Koll, in his 17th season at the helm, has already amassed a record of 184-69-4 overall in duals, including 10 total Ivy titles. Under Koll, the Red has captured three EIWA team championships, with 27 individual titles. Five Red wrestlers have earned NCAA titles, with 31 receiving All-American honors.
The probable starters at the 10 weight categories are as follows:
125 Pounds
Wrestling at 125 pound is returning national champion Troy Nickerson. At 5-4, the Chenango Forks, N.Y. native is diminutive but quick with a strength to match his speed; the Red will expect nothing less than a second title from its most decorated senior.
133 Pounds
At 133 pounds is junior Mike Grey, an impressive Red wrestler from Rockaway who has qualified for the NCAAs twice and finished sixth in last season’s national championship meet.
141 Pounds
At 141 pounds is a freshman, native son Kyle Drake. The six-time letter winner from Lansing High School has been to more Cornell wrestling matches than just about any other member of the team, according to Koll, since he’s been attending them since he was two years old.
149 Pounds
At 149 pounds is junior Corey Manson. Manson, who did not compete last season, complied a solid 6-4 record his freshman year, including a 2-2 Ivy tally.
157 Pounds
At 157 is the colorful junior D.J. Meagher. Meagher has already proven himself worthy of the national stage after receiving an at-large bid to the NCAAs as a sophomore. Meagher made second-team All-Ivy as well, going 3-1 in conference matches.
165 Pounds
At 165 is junior Justin Kerber. Kerber, from Iowa, is also an NCAA qualifier, as well as an EIWA finalist. During the 2008 season he made first team All-Ivy, as well as the NWCA All-Academic Team.
174 Pounds
At 174 is junior Mack Lewnes. Lewnes is another of Cornell’s highly decorated stars, with a fourth-place finish at the NCAAs in 2008, while also qualifying in 2009. He was an EIWA Champion in 2008 and 2009, and a 2008 All-American.
184 Pounds
At 184 is another relative newcomer, sophomore Steve Bosak. Last year, Bosak earned strong finishes at several Invitationals for the Red.
197 Pounds
At 197 is Michigan sophomore Cam Simaz. Last season was a good one for the young Simaz, who placed eighth at the NCAAs, earned an individual title at the EIWAs and was named an All-American.
Heavyweight
At Heavyweight is another senior, Josh Arnone. While injured for part of his career with the Red, Arnone is an NCAA qualifier with All-American (2007) and second-team All-Ivy winner (2008).
