Women’s tennis wrapped up the fall season this weekend at the Harvard Invitational in Cambridge, Mass. In the final event before the winter session begins in January, the Red capped off a strong season of individual play with the Invite.
Freshman Christine Ordway continued to dominate on the court as she has done all season long, making it all the way to the finals of the first singles bracket before falling to Whitney Wolf of LSU, 6-1, 6-3. Ordway did not drop a set en route to her finals appearance.
Rockin’ the round-robin: Senior Natalia Sanchez lost in the second round of the indiv. consolation bracket. Along with freshman Kristin Lim, she then beat an LSU and Harvard duo in B doubles round-robin.
Junior Sinziana Chis and Senior Susan Sullivan both fell in the first round of the first singles bracket; however both had success in the consolation grouping. Sullivan made it to the semifinals after losing to Misia Krasowski of Brown, 6-0, 6-1. Chis advanced to the quarterfinals after a 6-3, 7-6 (3), loss in the opening round to Brown’s Julie Flanzer.
Senior Natalia Sanchez was forced to retire during her first round match after dropping the first set, 6-2.
Freshman Sarah O’Neil won the second singles bracket with a, 6-4, 6-2, straight set victory in the finals. O’Neil did not drop a set in any of her three matches during the Invitational. Freshman Geraldine Leong lost her first round match, however she did advance to the semifinals of the consolation bracket where she lost to Kylie Adamek of LSU, 7-6 (4), 6-0.
Junior Leah Seyburn advanced to the third round of the third singles bracket before falling to Louise Laciny of Harvard, 6-3, 6-0. Seyburn won a close first round match over Sloane Mathis of LSU, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, and won her second round match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
In the round robin doubles tournament, Sullivan and O’Neil headed back out onto the court for a first round match against the Wolf/Kantor duo from LSU. Sullivan and O’Neil lost the match 8-4, however they did come back to win their third round robin match, 9-8 (5), over the team from Brown.
Sanchez and freshman Kristin Lim came out with a strong effort in the B doubles tournament, winning two of their three matches. The Red duo won its first match, 8-2, over their LSU opponents, and also held off the team from Harvard with an impressive 8-1 victory.
The women’s team will look to kick off the winter season on January 29th when it hosts the annual Cornell Winter Invitational in Ithaca.
After finishing up its fall schedule last week, the men’s team will have the better part of the next three months off to train and take a break after a long but successful start to the year. The team resumes play on its home courts at the Reis Tennis Center on February 6th for the beginning of a two-day tournament against Marist, Georgetown and Binghamton. Until then its now time for both squads to reflect on the fall and prepare for the winter session.
