The women’s soccer team will spend its Halloween on the soccer field, appropriately battling against the orange and black of Princeton.

One of the team’s two remaining games of the season, this match will provide another chance for the Red (1-11-1, 0-5 Ivy) to improve its Ivy record.

After two close losses during the last two matches — the Red lost, 1-0, to Brown during the final five minutes, and fell, 2-1, to Yale in overtime in that matchup — Cornell is all the more anxious for a win.

“Since there are only two games left, I think we obviously want to end the season on a high note, especially for our seniors, because these are the last two games of soccer they will play here,” said sophomore goalkeeper Megan Bartlett.

Princeton (6-6-3, 2-2-1 Ivy) is coming off of a 1-0 win against Harvard last weekend. The late goal came from the team’s top scorer, Jen Hoy, who has so far netted three goals and managed two assists this season. The Tigers hold the series advantage against the Red, 18-7-4, and have won the last 13 straight contests against Cornell.

The Tigers boast a solid defense — the team has shutout its competition in its five most recent games and has the fewest goals allowed of any Ivy League team. Princeton’s goalkeeper, Alyssa Pont, leads the League with an 0.82 goals allowed average and a .837 save percentage.

For the Red, preparing to take on this tough competitor involves a mix of practice as normal along with added drills to anticipate the types of players they will encounter from Princeton.

“We don’t completely change what we do based on who will be playing,” Bartlett said. “But we definitely work on things that we know the other team is good at.”

One of the main things the Red needs to work on for the rest of the season is finishing on goal attempts, because gaining an advantage earlier in the game would help ensure a Cornell victory.

“This week, we are focusing more on the attacking, the final third, scoring pretty much,” Bartlett said. “We’re trying to keep that level of play throughout the entire game and not let up, because the minute we make a mistake, or the minute that we let down, we get scored on and end up losing.”

Not only is the team focusing on its offense, but the Red is also striving to keep up its stamina at each position. As the time clock runs low, the team wants to keep its focus and not give up.

“We are going to try to keep that energy throughout the whole game,” Bartlett said. “And not let down towards the end, and hopefully instead of letting down at the end, push forward and score and win.”

With time running out in the season, the team is going to give it their all in these final two matches, and is optimistic that its efforts will yield positive results.

“We’re going no holds barred, all out in these last two games,” said sophomore defender Sam Wright.
