The women’s soccer team finished off its home season with a disappointing loss this past weekend, falling 1-0 to Brown after allowing a late goal from the Bears on Sunday.
“I thought it was a really hard-fought game. We were unlucky that in the last five minutes they scored, which was hard, but I think we played our hearts out,” said senior defender Kala Neilson.
The seniors on the roster — Eva Dixon, Rebecca Flewelling, Kala Neilson and Elizabeth Scully — were honored in a pregame ceremony to mark their last time competing in a Red uniform at Berman Field.
“I’m definitely going to miss playing on Berman,” Neilson said. “It was very emotional. It was mixed emotions because I was excited to play but it was bittersweet, but I also knew it was my last time … I can’t believe I already had my last home game, and I don’t think it’s hit me yet.”
Bowing out: Senior forward Eva Dixon was honored, along with her fellow seniors, before the Red’s final home game, a 1-0 loss to Brown Sunday.
This loss keeps the Red (1-11-1, 0-5-0 Ivy) anxious for an Ivy win, while it improved the Bears’ record to 5-7-1. After defeating the Bears last season, the Red was hoping to remain ahead of Brown’s squad, but fell short.
“They seemed like a very beatable team … but I don’t really know what happened,” said freshman forward Maneesha Chitanvis. “I think our biggest problem was that we needed to score earlier. We wanted to get the win for the seniors, but it didn’t work out.”
Both teams seemed evenly matched throughout the first period, as each struggled to find the back of the net. Although Brown outshot the Red, 11-4, several attempts from Cornell’s forwards were just short and made it look like the Red had a good chance to come out on top.
One of senior Eva Dixon’s shots on goal was one of those close calls.
“One of our forwards had a really close chance, a breakaway, and it didn’t go in,” Neilson said. “I think it would have been a completely different game if that had happened.”
Just when it seemed like an overtime period might be necessary, the Bears scored late in the second half. With about five minutes of play remaining, a Cornell defender blocked a shot towards the right side of the goal, but Brown’s Gina Walker picked it up. Walker delivered the assist to teammate Sylvia Stone, who kicked it into the Cornell net with a low shot to the left corner that the Red’s goalie just missed swatting away.
“We just got unlucky in the end. They got the luck and the ball went in, and we had some chances but it didn’t go in for us. I do think that we were evenly matched, if not, we were the better team for sure,” Neilson said.
Brown’s team switched its goalkeeper midway through the game, and each made one save during her shift. The Cornell goalkeeper, sophomore Megan Bartlett, blocked two attempts from the Bears during the matchup.
With a pair of Ivy games left on the schedule, the Red knows it still has chances to improve and accomplish more victories.
“I think that we played well. We obviously need to finish our chances and that we need to just worry now about moving forward…We will be working on our shooting and getting the job done in the final third,” said junior forward Russomagno.
