The Cornell women’s soccer team will face off against Brown this Sunday in its last home game of the season. This game will be the final career home match for four seniors, whose accomplishments the Red will celebrate during the match.

“We’re all really excited for the game against Brown this weekend and are fired up after a heartbreaking overtime loss last weekend against Yale,” said senior midfielder Rebecca Flewelling.

Brown (4-7-1) is coming off of a 2-2 tie at Holy Cross on Tuesday evening. The Bears showed their ability to bounce back, scoring late in the game, evening the tally during the last 10 minutes of play. Claiming a 17-6 advantage in shots, Brown also demonstrated that is has an energetic front line, which Cornell (1-10-1) must be prepared to counter.

The Red will also be honoring its seniors at Sunday’s game.“We know that they have some fast forwards…but, I know we are going to be very competitive and we’re ready to play them,” said junior midfielder Katie Hayes.

Brown’s Joyce Chun, who netted one of her team’s game-tying goals, leads the Bears in scoring with four season goals so far. Two other offensive players to look out for are Melissa Kim and Gina Walker, who trail Chun in goal-scoring with six points each.

The Red took the win, 2-0, in its last meeting with Brown, its lone Ivy victory last season, and hopes to repeat their success against the Bears this season.

Sophomore forward Brook Chang recognizes that the Red’s key to playing its best this weekend may be to take the pressure off and play like they have been practicing.

“We found that we perform the best when we’re just relaxed, not overworked, and having a good time. I think in the practices leading up to the game we relax, but stay intense at the same time,” Chang said.

Specifically, Cornell has been preparing to finish its goal attempts.

“Like every Ivy League game, we know it’s going to be a battle. If we play our game and finish the chances we generate, we will come out on top,” Flewelling said. “We have been training with high intensity the past few weeks and are confident that it will pay off this weekend.”

For the seniors on the team, this game will be a memorable one.

“It’s going to be a particularly emotional game for Eva, Kala, Lizzy and I as it will be the last time we get to step on Berman Field. The four years have flown by and it’s hard to believe that it has to come to an end,” Flewelling said.

This wrapping up of college play gives the seniors on the squad an additional incentive to put in their full effort for not only this game, but the three remaining Ivy matchups on the schedule.

“I think we will all be playing for each other this weekend and will do whatever we can for the win. It has been an honor to be a part of Cornell Soccer for four years and I hope that as seniors, we can close out our careers by helping the team win all three remaining games of the season,” said Flewelling.
