The golf team closed out the fall portion of its season over the weekend in Mattapoisett, Mass., at the first-ever Ivy League match play tournament. As has been the case throughout much of the season, the tournament was shortened due to inclement weather.
The Red opened the weekend with a loss to Penn, last year’s runner-up at the Ivy League Championships.
The Red lost 3-2, meaning that out of the five individual matchups being played, the Red lost three and won two.
“Losing to Penn was pretty demoralizing,” said junior Dan Bosse. “We felt good going into it, and we felt like we played pretty well, but we just didn’t make as many putts as they did.”
Later in the afternoon, the Red lost to Dartmouth, 4-1. As a team they were not able to fully shake off their tough loss to Penn earlier in the day.
“We were still kind of out of it after our tough loss to Penn,” Bosse said. “It just didn’t quite work out.”
The Red was scheduled to play Brown yesterday, but the rest of the tournament was cancelled due to a mix of rain and snow in New England. Despite the tough losses, the Red still feels good about itself and how the team stacks up against the rest of the Ancient Eight heading into the offseason.
Looking to the future: The Red will partake in an offseason workout regimen as it prepares for the spring season. The team will also likely practice at an indoor golf simulator
“We played pretty well considering the weather and everything,” Bosse said. “We still feel pretty confident about ourselves. Penn is a good team who finished second in the Ivy League last year, and we were right there with them.”
Looking at the fall portion of the season as a whole, the Red played well but was never fully able to string together consecutive rounds of its best golf. The talent and the confidence is in place for the Red to succeed; the team just needs to fine-tune its execution on game day.
The Red now has the long, Ithaca winter to rest up and prepare for the spring. The Red will partake in an offseason workout regimen, something it did not do last offseason but did in previous years. In addition, the squad will likely spend time honing its swings at an indoor golf simulator used in years past.
“We’ll have our workouts and spend time working on our swings,” Bosse said. “Unfortunately there’s not much else we can do when snow is on the ground. So other than that we’ll just rest up and get ready for the spring.”
