The rowing teams are ready to participate in the Head of the Charles Regatta, the world’s largest two-day rowing event, on Sunday. The Red rowing crews are going to compete in three different categories: the men’s heavyweight team is going to participate in the Championship Eights; the men’s lightweight group will take part in the Lightweight Eights event, while the women’s crew will represent Cornell in the Championship Fours.

The Red rowing crews are coming from a solid performance at the Quadricentennial Poughkeepsie Regatta hosted by Marist College and they are looking forward to continue with their success in Boston.

“It’s really going to be very different,” said Todd Kennett, head coach of the men’s heavyweight team, about the Charles regatta. “To win at this level really means a lot. You got big level schools like Washington, Cal and Stanford. It’s definitely a different level.”

The men’s heavyweight crew will participate in Sunday’s last event of the regatta against Ivy League teams like Brown, Columbia, Harvard, Penn, Princeton and Yale, and other rowing crews like MIT, Georgetown and the German Rowing Association.

The Red’s heavyweight team is certainly going to face a big challenge, as many of their key rowers were from last year’s senior class.

“This class is different,” Kennett said. “We lost a lot of our big guns last year. ...But this has given the opportunity to shine to other guys and they are getting good results. ...Our team is under the radar.”Down by the river: The Cornell rowing teams will head to Boston for the Head of the Charles race, the biggest two-day rowing event in the world.Down by the river: The Cornell rowing teams will head to Boston for the Head of the Charles race, the biggest two-day rowing event in the world.

The men’s lightweight crew is looking to bounce back from a loss at the Poughkeepsie Regatta to Navy. It will face Ivy League members Columbia, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, Penn and Yale, and contenders like MIT and the Navy.

The lightweight race is just before the Women’s Championship Fours, where the Red women’s crew is going to compete against Stanford, Michigan, Yale and Princeton, among others.

“We didn’t get the bid to participate in the regatta as eights, however, we are have a fours team and we definitely still have high expectations for the race. ...This is a thrilling event and we know that our girls can do something exciting too,” said senior captain Harlan Trevithick.

The team is unable to practice in Boston before the race, which might be problematic due to the windy course and turns that force the boat to slow. Although the rowing teams are going to the Head of the Charles Regatta with some disadvantages, they are still positive about the events.

“I hope that the win at the last regatta doesn’t give our guys an excess of confidence because the Head of the Charles is a very different event,” Kennett said. “But I do know that the positive result at Poughkeepsie is going to motivate them to work hard for another victory and that they are going to enjoy the event.”

“We want to let our presence known. We really proved something at the last event and we are motivated to compete,” said Trevithick.
