The sprint football team will hit the road for the last time this season, playing Penn in Philadelphia on Saturday.

The Quakers (3-1, 1-1 CSFL) edged out the Red (2-2, 2-1) in its first game of the season, 20-14, in a defensive standoff between the two rival CSFL programs. Junior linebackers Clay Hemminger and Matt Ferrari led Cornell’s defense with 14 and 11 tackles, respectively, and junior defensive lineman Tim Kozen sacked Penn quarterback Todd Busler twice for a total loss of 21 yards. On the other side of the ball, senior running back DJ Schiavetta broke in his kicks as the team’s featured back, with 71 rushing and 179 all-purpose yards.

Penn is coming off its first loss of the season, a 35-26 defeat to undefeated Army. Despite the loss, Busler was named CSFL Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against the Black Knights: 27-of-42 for 429 yards and two touchdowns. Penn kicker Ralam Santos won Special Teams Player of the Week for a well-rounded punting and kicking performance, including going 4-of-4 in field goals.

The Red offense should be in sync after its 44-0 rout of Princeton last week. Junior quarterback Elliot Corey went 2-of-4 for 101 yards and two touchdowns before coach Bart Guccia removed the starters for his bench players. Corey’s backup, sophomore Tim Bruhn, ended up leading the team on the ground with 91 yards and a touchdown, and he chipped in 54 yards on 2-of-5 passing with another touchdown.
