Cornell fell for the first time this season to Yale on Saturday afternoon in New Haven, Conn. The devastating 1-0 loss came in overtime when the Bulldogs were awarded a penalty corner that would eventually tarnish the Red’s impeccable record.

“There was a lot of pressure on us that game due to the fact that we were undefeated,” said junior midfielder Mattie Prodanovic, “It is unrealistic to expect to have a perfect season. However, there is a need to be perfect in the Ivies because Princeton currently is.”

Cornell’s (7-1, 2-1 Ivy) senior goalkeeper Mel Jue’s recorded seven saves in the second half helped keep the Bulldogs (6-3, 2-1 Ivy) scoreless. But 1:44 into the extra period, Yale’s Erin Carter found the back of the net off of a free-position feed from the corner. Carter was able to score her third goal in three games (she had two career goals before her recent hot streak) despite the Bulldogs being down a player due to a yellow card.

“The problem with overtime is that it revolves around possession and Yale started with the ball,” said Prodanovic. “Overtime is a different game because there are less people on the field and there is a lot more space. It is very difficult to cause a turnover and create an opportunity when the other team wins the ball right off of whistle and is good at maintaining possession. We didn’t play ‘our’ game throughout regulation and we were pumped for overtime, but we never got a chance. That’s why you never want it to come down to sudden death or strokes.”

But unfortunately for the Red, this one did come down to sudden death. In the heavy rain, neither team could manage a score in regulation. Yale held the statistical edge, with a 13-9 lead in penalty corners and a 17-13 advantage in shots. The Red only put three shots on goal. Two goalies, junior Katie Bolling and senior Charlotte Goins, split time for Yale.

“We are heading into pre-game practice with some things to work on with the goal of rebuilding before Colgate,” said junior attack Catie De Stio. “At this point, we are just focusing on the next win.”
