Senior Robert Cronheim and junior Matt Jaye led the way for the Red, each tying for 8th place overall with a two-round total of 148. Junior Dan Bosse rebounded after a tough first day to shoot a 73 on day two, leaving him with a two-day total of 157. Junior Larry Heymont led the way for the B team, posting a 77 in both rounds to finish with a 154.
Swing away: Sophomore Alex Lavin placed 19th overall at the 2009 Cornell Golf Invitational, out of a 36-round total.
The poor weather affected the play of all teams participating. Heavy rains mixed with strong winds greatly altered the Red’s approach to their home course.
“For the rounds that we did get to play,” said junior Ben Myer, who finished the weekend with a 157. “It was windier than I’ve ever seen it before at that course. It definitely changed the course for us a lot. Some holes played much shorter than usual, other played much longer.”
Even with the improvement from last week and the bad weather, the Red still feel that they are far from playing their best golf.
“In general we’re kind of disappointed,” Myer said. “It’s our home course so we have vastly superior knowledge of the course over anybody else. We’re not overly pleased with the numbers we put up.”
The Red now has two weeks before its next tournament to work on specific weaknesses. As is normal for golfers, the primary focus for most of the team will be on their short games. In addition to practicing, the squad will have more rounds of qualifying to determine which five members of the team will travel to Philadelphia for the next tournament.
“We’ll have more rounds of qualifying,” Myer said. “And other than that everybody is just going to work on whatever their biggest weaknesses are at this point. I’d say for most people though that’s putting.”
