The men’s and women’s tennis teams will be in action this weekend. The men’s team will be following up on last week’s solid performance in the Cornell Invitational, where the Red swept the Singles and Doubles flights. For the women, this weekend will be their first match of the season. The women will be at Binghamton, facing their local rivals at the Binghamton Invitational.
This weekend also marks the beginning of the men’s and women’s joint seasons. According to senior Jeremy Feldman, Coach David Geatz will be travelling with the men exclusively this year. The women will be left in the very able hands of the Red’s two assistant coaches, Marty Johnson and Ty Schaub.
“We talked to the women and it made sense that Coach Geatz travel with us throughout the season,” Feldman said. “We had a great year last year with Coach Geatz, and he knows exactly how our team works and what we need to do to succeed.”
Finesse: The men are hoping to continue the momentum they held last weekend when they hosted the Cornell Invitational.
The men are hoping to continue the success they had this past weekend at home. The team was able to produce two individual titles, and dominated the doubles flight with an all-Red final.
As expected, upperclassmen dominated play at the Cornell Invitational. Junior Jonathan Jaklitsch took the title in singles, while the super duo of juniors Andy Gauthier and Feldman took home the doubles trophy.
The underclassmen were noticeably missing from this weekend’s action. Of the five freshman on the Red’s roster, only one finished his first round match. Freshman Jared Carson produced an unexpected victory that made many team members reconsider the underdog.
“We were really impressed with Jared’s performance this past weekend,” Feldman said. “We didn’t have huge expectations going into his match, but he really blew past all of us.”
This weekend will be the Red’s first good look at its Ivy competition for the next few months. Feldman and Gauthier are expected to do well this weekend, but there are teams to watch out for. Columbia, last year’s Ivy League Champions, are bringing a strong team to Princeton this year. The Lions added three talented freshman to their roster, and will be looking to defend their title in the Spring. Feldman is also on the look out for Penn who added a transfer from UCLA to its roster.
For the women, this weekend is a chance to start the season off right. The Red had a tough Spring season last year and is hoping to bounce back with the help of Coaches Geatz, Schaub and Johnson. Many top teams from Upstate New York and the east coast will come to Ithaca to play in the Invitational. It is unclear how the Red will fare this weekend.
Junior Ruxandra Dumitrescu is expected to lead the Red in singles. Dumitrescu lead the Red last season with her powerful play. The team has had difficulty putting together the four matches necessary to win a fixture.
This weekend will be an important test for both the men and the women. The women start play tomorrow at Reis Tennis Center, while the men will be competing at Princeton.
