A few months after the heartbreaking loss that ended the men’s lacrosse team’s season in the national championship game, head coach Jeff Tambroni turned his eyes toward the future, naming seniors Ryan Hurley and Pierce Derkac team captains for the 2010 season. The announcement came Sunday morning at the team’s annual awards banquet in Statler Hotel.
Derkac is a versatile long-pole midfielder who played on the team’s face-off unit and transition defense. During the 2009 season, he caused a team-high 13 turnovers and picked up 52 ground balls, including seven while filling in for John Glynn at the face-off ‘X’ against Hobart in the first round of the NCAA playoffs.
Hurley is one of the team’s most prolific scorers, becoming the fifth Cornellian to score 40 goals in back-to-back seasons. He scored 45 in 2009 and has registered at least one point in his last 32 games, the longest streak on the team and third-longest in the country.
