LETTER: Remembering Andrew Quinn ’12

Below is a statement submitted by the brothers of the Delta Upsilon fraternity’s Class of 2012 in memory of Andrew Quinn ’12, who died Friday in a hit-and-run accident.

At the Delta Upsilon Spring 2009 initiation, our alumni president welcomed us into the brotherhood and stated, “Look around at your pledge class. These will be the men that will not only be at your graduation, but also at your wedding, your children’s birthdays, and your funeral.” Never did we think that the first event would be a funeral.

As some of you may know, Andrew John Quinn ’12, a brother of Delta Upsilon, was tragically killed in a hit and run accident Friday night in New York City.  Andrew was a loyal friend to us all; he was fun-loving, talented and ambitious.  We are stunned by his loss and simply can’t believe that we won’t be able to live out the rest of our lives with him.  However, we are grateful for the time we spent with him and will cherish his memory forever.

We would like to share with you how much it means to have our brotherhood network as support. Within hours of learning about this horrible accident, brothers were at the site of the accident trying to comprehend the unthinkable. Others were booking their flights to NYC to share memories of Andrew and support those in need. Similarly, current DU brothers united in the chapter house to share stories. Among the tears, Quinn’s brother cracked a smile when he learned that the undergraduate brothers wanted to know the date of the ceremony so they could make travel arrangements.

We couldn’t imagine going through this difficult time without the support of our pledge class, alumni and the current brothers. Among the stress of prelims, jobs, and whatever else happens in your life, please remember to love the ones you care about.

One of the most emotional aspects of the weekend was a simple picture sent to us by a current brother. It was the entire chapter in one room, raising a glass to our fallen brother.

We love and miss you bud; you will always be our brother.

Please keep the memory of Andrew Quinn alive by living everyday to the fullest, the way Andrew did.
