The White Panda, Saturday, 7:00 p.m. on the Arts Quad: Last year, the Cornell Concert Commission’s annual free show was such a success that some of its more hyperbole-prone attendees christened it “Fall Slope Day.” Exaggerations aside, last fall’s Super Mash Bros-soundtracked party was a downright banger, and, with mashup duo The White Panda on hand for this Saturday’s open air shindig, chances are it will be a similarly raucous time. The White Panda works several moods, from the trance-hop juxtaposition of “Stereo Hands” to the acidic, clubby take on Kid Cudi, “Escape from Day ‘N’ Nite.” Abetted by the simple pleasure of sample recognition, The White Panda will undoubtedly give Cornellians the big dance party they have come to expect from the CCC free show.
Colin Stetson and Emily Wells, Wednesday, 9:00 p.m at Delilah’s: Colin Stetson, whose thick cheeks blow torrents from his saxophone, will be joined by the upbeat violinist Emily Wells this Wednesday night, downtown at Delilah’s Restaurant. Stetson, a graduate from the University of Michigan with a degree in music, has played saxophone with some of today’s most prolific bands and artists, including Arcade Fire, The National, Tom Waits, David Byrne, TV on the Radio and most recently, Bon Iver. His buccaneer melodies ought to nicely accompany the sweet voice of Wells, who typically loops together several different instruments — piano, glockenspiel, xylophone and, her specialty, the violin — into a theme that, crudely summarized, bridges hip-hop with classical. Over fried goat cheese and fish tacos, one will have to analyze what this duo of singular styles will produce.
The Rocky Horror Show, Tuesday-Sunday, various times at the Hangar Theater: Whether you love exclaiming “Dammit Janet,” pondering the fate of a certain “Sweet Transvestite” or simply hankering to listen to “The Time Warp” again and again, the Hangar Theater will be presenting its version of The Rocky Horror Show this week. The Rocky Horror cult will be out in full force, dressed for the part and ready to sing and dance along to the performance. For the uninitiated, it’s a bizarre sight to witness; for those in the know, it’s a celebration of individuality, sexuality and glam rock music in the vein of Meat Loaf (who was featured in the film version along with Tim Curry), The New York Dolls and T. Rex. Whatever side you fall on, it’ll be one hell of an experience for all.
