Caution: While listening to Mika’s new album, The Boy Who Knew Too Much, you may feel that you are permanently stuck in some sort of intense cartoon musical performance. While British pop sensation Mika may have extremely odd taste, in the case of his new album, he pulls it off for the most part. Sounding a bit like a modern Freddy Mercury, Mika sings about his past struggles with his sexuality and his newly-found zest for life. Although the subject matter may be intense, the extremely catchy, theatrical-pop beats make you want to get up and dance for the majority of the CD.
The album starts off with the hit single, “We are Golden,” which has one of the best music videos I’ve seen in a while. In this song, he promotes a new anthem for our generation: “Who gives a damn about the family you come from? No giving up when you’re young and you want some.” Some other songs you should check out include “Blame it on the Girls,” “Dr. John” and “Touches You.” While most of his songs fall in line with the similar catchy pop-genre from his previous album, Mika attempts to branch out by throwing in a couple of slow songs —in these instances, he definitely fails. The album starts off so well with its enjoyable dance songs and goes way downhill in his attempt to woo the audience with his obnoxiously high-pitched voice. While his voice fits with the upbeat tempos, it is actually painful to listen to in some of the slower songs.
Mika, in your future musical endeavors, stick to your eccentric glam-pop dance songs — lay off the slow stuff — and you will continue to remain in my good graces.
