Academy of Arts and Sciences Inducts Three Profs

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) selected three Cornell professors as some of its newest members last month in recognition of their work in such fields as astronomy, mathematics and literature. AAAS is an international learned society whose members are some of the world's leading scientists, scholars, artists, business people, and public leaders. AAAS honored over 200 individuals this year; new fellows are elected by its current 4,000 members.

As part of the Cornell Mosaic conference last weekend, keynote speaker President Jeffrey S. Lehman '77 spoke Saturday night about the importance of racial diversity and integration on campus. Lehman, as the former dean of the University of Michigan Law School, was a named defendant in the Supreme Court case Grutter v. Bollinger, where the school's affirmative action admissions policy was in contention. The Supreme Court ruled in Michigan's favor in the summer of 2003 as Lehman was transitioning to the presidency of Cornell.


Mosaic Conference Promotes Diversity

Cornell University played host this weekend to a conference of unprecedented significance for the cause of racial diversity and inclusion on campus. The dual goals of the Cornell Mosaic program were to celebrate racial diversity and advance inclusion in the form of a three-day conference, packed with workshops and opportunities for discussion between the 600 attendees. Registrants ranged from alumni as far back as the class of 1955 to current undergraduate and graduate students.

This weekend, you may see more people than usual roaming central campus -- but this time, most of them won't be incoming freshmen and their parents visiting during Cornell Days. Starting tomorrow, several hundred Cornell alumni will converge here for a celebration of diversity in an unprecedented conference meant to advance racial inclusion, promote greater alumni involvement and encourage interaction between alumni and current students.


CURB Shows Off Research

The Spring Forum is not a discussion about the season of spring, though that topic could easily be one of hundreds of topics discussed in it.

Over 100 undergraduate students hailing from all seven colleges showcased their research last week in the 20th Cornell Undergraduate Research Board (CURB) Spring Forum, culminating in the organization's largest annual event that brought over 400 students and faculty to participate.


GPSA Elects New Exec. Board Members

The Graduate and Professional Student Assembly held their last regular meeting of this school year and elected new officers last night at the Big Red Barn.

After the nominations, nominees made brief statements and were asked questions. Though the meeting is open to the entire Cornell community, restrictions exist on who may speak and vote.

"Only graduate or professional students may make nominations or ask questions of the candidates. Only members of the 2005-06 Assembly may vote," said Brian Holmes grad, Sun columnist and the 2004-2005 GPSA president.

GPSA members could nominate themselves or other delegates for the positions of GPSA president, vice-president and secretary. Any graduate or professional student can be selected for the remaining positions.

Gen. Clark to Speak At Convocation '05

The convocation committee announced last night that Gen. Wesley Clark will be the convocation speaker during the class of 2005 commencement weekend.

"[Gen. Clark] is a distinguished leader ... and is an inspiration for Cornell students in their last Cornell ceremony, a send-off speech that embodies everything that they've gotten over their time at Cornell," said David Katz-Doft '05, co-chair of the convocation committee.

I.C. Students Protest Race Crimes

Racial slurs were written in various places all around Ithaca College Sunday and Monday. These incidents were preceded by bias-related incidents against Asians, African-Americans and women in February and March.

In response, I.C. students outraged at the events held an "Erase the Hate" Rally for yesterday afternoon and looked for other solutions to deal with intolerance on I.C.'s campus.

Over 500 people showed up for the rally yesterday, according to Ebony Blue, an Erase the Hate Task Force representative. The group was pleased with the people who appeared at the rally, including members of the I.C. administration and Ithaca city officials.

"We are standing up as a campus to show we won't tolerate this stuff," Blue said. "I just hope ...

Inge Reichenbach, Cornell's vice president for alumni affairs and development, resigned yesterday to accept a position as vice president for development at Yale University. Her resignation will take effect in early May.
