What a Joke: The Art of The Whistling Shrimp
November 18, 2009 - 1:55am“Oh my fucking god! It’s the Whistling Shrimp!”
When Mark Vignet ’11 pumped up the Shrimp for their performance “Paint By Numbers” Saturday night, he was just as excited as the first time he saw the comedy group during his freshmen orientation. Outside the dimly lit theater, audience members were waiting to take their seats at The Schwartz Center. It was show time.
Risley’s 'Rocky Horror Picture Show' Puts the ‘Tran’ in Transylvania
November 18, 2009 - 1:55am“Are you a virgin?!”
No, it’s not an advance of any sort. It’s an audience filter for the innocent, a means to weed out and expose Rocky Horror seedlings to the comically sensuous light of a theater experience unlike any other. A gleaming stripper pole, a monitor fashioned out of scored cardboard and a human torso, tasseled pasties and the Time Warp. A typical weekend, right? And what better way of spending it than seeing your classmates decked out in fishnets, body-glitter and six-inch platforms? You’ll find yourself compelled to stand up and boogie with your fellow confused but excited patrons, and you’ll be impressed by how many guys have it in them to rock a corset and a garter belt.

A Facelift for Collegetown With Cornell Doing the Lifting
November 18, 2009 - 1:55amIn recent weeks, evidence of the recession has surfaced in Collegetown. With the closing of Sinbad’s and Collegetown Candy and Nuts, upperclassmen walking to and from class are nearly guaranteed to pass a vacant storefront or two. It is worrisome to witness businesses shutting down in the area, but now may be a defining time for redevelopment of Collegetown’s commercial landscape.
Different Paths, Same Idea
November 18, 2009 - 1:55amMy circuitous path to Cornell included two-year stops at the U.S. Naval Academy and the Island of Borneo, where I served as a Mormon missionary. My cocktail hour inquisitors often focus their questions on the discipline and adventure of that period in my life. They want to explore the differences between Cornell and life in uniform — military or priestly. What was basic training like? How about the guns? Did you meet a headhunter? (In order: awful, awesome and I think so, but Borneo is the same as America in at least one way … you don’t just ask a guy if he’s a killer.)
The Epic Tofu Tragedy of 2009
November 18, 2009 - 1:55amAfter a grueling and torturous year of starving at Cornell, all I wanted was to go home and eat my mother’s delicious cooking for an entire summer. I wanted to walk through the kitchen on a sunny afternoon and let the tantalizing aroma envelope my body and soul. My lips would begin to quiver as I bring the food closer to my mouth. My taste buds would tingle and a glistening tear would fall down my cheek as I slowly chewed, savoring every moment, every second, thanking God that I lived to experience this once more.
