Student Dismayed with Lazio Peformance

Last night in a debate with Hillary Clinton, Rick Lazio tried to introduce himself to the public as a strong Senate candidate. As I watched Rick Lazio stumble over issues such as soft money, taxes, character, and teachers on strike, I found myself laughing at him. I simply could not contain myself whenever he tried to make claims that he was a strong environmentalist, a believer in health care reform, and a campaign reformer. While watching him lie on television, I dearly wished that I could go up onto the podium and tell the audience the truth.

His poor and spotty track record reflects far closer to what he truly represents than his lip service. His attempt to paint himself as an environmentalist is laughable. Long Island is hardly the Garden of Eden. The host of the debate, Tim Russert, should have asked Lazio if he had gone to the beaches there lately. Environmentalist Lazio? No way.

His stance as a supporter of health care reform is doubtful at best. Last time I checked, he was strongly standing beside the HMOs. On the contrary, Hillary has spent much time fighting for the uninsured and has fought to protect the environment. Lazio lacked substance in any of his answers which is unacceptable for a candidate with his background.

I have barely even scratched the surface on Lazio's record. On the flip side, I have also barely mentioned Hillary's record. Yet, based on what I have presented so far, there is simply far too much evidence that points out just how poor of a candidate he really is. During the debate, Hillary sarcastically said to Lazio, "That was a wonderful performance. And you did it very well." I disagree. His act convinced no one.
