A man died in a shooting at around 2 a.m. Tuesday morning at an apartment complex at 301 Maple Ave., according to officials. When police arrived on the scene, they found the body of Paul Garcia, 47, of New York City in the parking lot of Maple Hill Apartments.

"We've got several leads," Tompkins County Sheriff Peter Meskill said. "I don't believe there's any danger to the community."

Meskill added that the Sheriff's Department is being aided by the Ithaca Police Department, the New York State Police and the CUPD in the investigation.

The CUPD sent out several crime alerts early Tuesday, one of which urged students near the apartment complex to "shelter in place."

In a message to the campus community today, Vice President for University Communications emphasized the need for multiple alerts.

"Chief Zoner realizes that the hours and frequency of the text and voice mails may have been disruptive to many last night. We regret the various effects that this necessary action may have had," Bruce said. "Like you, we wish the technology existed that would allow us to be more selective about who should receive such alerts in the middle of an incident."

Authorities will conduct an autopsy Tuesday afternoon at a Binghamton hospital, the Associated Press reported.

Maple Hill Apartments lies just outside the southern edge of campus, across the street from Cornell’s vegetable crops buildings.
