President Václav Klaus ’69 of the Czech Republic will return to The Hill — where he studied economics 41 years ago — Sept. 24, the University announced this week.
The lecture, entitled, “A Return to Cornell: Personal Remarks by the President of the Czech Republic,” will take place at 3 p.m. in Statler Auditorium.
His visit — sponsored by the Mario Einaudi Center’s Foreign Policy Distinguished speaker series — will feature a campus tour, lunch with President David Skorton and Provost Kent Fuchs, and a public lecture and reception.
Klaus is now in his second five-year term as president of the Czech Republic. He served previously as the prime minister of the Czech Republic in 1992, after heading the Civic Forum in 1990 — the country’s biggest political party at the time.
Klaus, who attended Cornell but did not earn a degree, also studied in Italy and at the Prague School of Economics. He has authored more than 20 works addressing sociocultural and political issues such as freedom, democracy and the political aspects of the sustainability movement.
The Einaudi Center’s Foreign Policy Distinguished Speaker Series has included past visits from former U.N. Assistant Secretary General Gillian Sorensen, retired U.S. Marine Corps General Anthony Zinni, and lecturers from top research institutions worldwide.
