A chill is in the air (a chillier chill than the usual Ithaca chill, to be exact) — the leaves are turning, and prelims officially own all of us. It must be autumn. That means it’s time to pick some apples, carve some pumpkins, bake some pies, bust out your wool socks (extra points if argyle or gold-toed) and most importantly, get drunk in proper autumnal fashion.
While I am a firm believer in the idea that you can simply never go wrong with the holy frat-water known as Keystone, it’s most important that you try and maintain full drink sexiness even during these transitory months. Having said that, here are several recipes full of autumn spice and color that will have you drunk and ready to face Ithaca come wintertime.
Pumpkin Spice Martini
2 1/2 oz. cinnamon vodka
1/2 oz. Bols Pumpkin Smash Liqueur
1 oz. Amaretto
What would fall be without the color orange and some delicious pumpkin spice? I’ll tell you: MISERABLE. Thankfully no such world exists, and thus I bring you the Pumpkin Spice Martini. Combine ingredients in a shaker full of spice. Shake briskly and then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Extra points for garnishing with toasted pumpkin seeds. Liquid pumpkin pie. Delicious.
Apple Pie Punch
2 cups apple juice or cider
4 oz. spiced rum
2 oz. cinnamon schnapps
Without apple pie you wouldn’t have happiness. Without apples you wouldn’t have apple pie. Without autumn you wouldn’t have apples. And without any of these things, you wouldn’t be drunk. Therefore: Fall + Apples = Happiness / Drunkenness. In a punch bowl or pitcher, combine apple juice, rum and Schnapps. Serve in a glass filled with ice and garnish with an apple slice. Serves six.
Hot Spiked Cider
2 quarts apple cider (I recommend getting some from the Ithaca Farmers Market.)
2 cloves
2 cinnamon sticks
6 oz. apple brandy
As previously mentioned, apples are the source of all of the world’s happiness, and who doesn’t want to be a happy drunk? In a small pan, combine cider, cloves and cinnamon with low heat. Stir until spices melt and bring it to a near boil. Pour a shot of apple brandy (1.5 oz.) into a mug and fill with cider concoction. Perfect for a late night study session (presuming you study best when drunk). Serves eight.
Autumn Buzz
1 1/4 oz. vodka
3/4 oz. pomegranate liqueur
1/2 cup sweet iced tea
1/4 tsp. grated orange zest
Some of you drinks out there might be the victims of seasonal depression. As the days get colder and darker, life seems sadder and sadder. SUFFER NO MORE! Autumn Buzz will serve as your cure. Mix ingredients in a shaker full of ice. Pour over ice and garnish with a lime. Life is good.
Summer? Overrated. Winter? Way too white. Spring? Allergies like woa. Autumn? The greatest time of the year. Apples, pumpkins, colored leaves, alcohol. Perfection.
