Take a look back at CornellSun.com's liveblog coverage of the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Final between the No. 5 Big Red and the No. 2 Syracuse Orange. Updates appear in descending order beginning with the most recent.
That's it. Heartbreaking 10-9 overtime loss for the Red. Syracuse's Cody Jamieson wins the title with a bouncing shot past Myers. Jamieson, the subject of several profiles in the past few days, is a junior college transfer who has only been eligible for a few games of this tournament because of NCAA regulations.
Great season for the Big Red, but the team's 16 seniors will go home empty-handed on Memorial Day thanks to clutch play by the Orange down the stretch.
Check cornellsun.com for a full recap later in the day.
Perritt looking to end the game with that shot, sent it wide but Syracuse keeps possession
Cornell wins the face-off but Syracuse gets the turnover on a dropped ball by Hurley
You've got to believe that sudden death overtime favors Syracuse with their quick-scoring ability. But if one of Cornell's top talents — Seibald, for example — can come up with a big shot, the Red can take the win and the national title.
Syracuse lost a 13-12 overtime game to Virginia earlier this season, so there is some doubt about the Orange's play in the clutch.
Regulation time complete. Sudden death overtime coming up next.
Here we go into sudden death overtime.
Incredible game. Sudden death overtime coming up
That was a LeBron James-esque shot from Kenny Nims.
Timeout Cornell.
That wasn't very professional; his name is...Nimms
Everyone on the field looks exhausted. Nims's first goal of the game is by far the biggest of his career
Some Syracuse dude scores with 4 seconds left. Tie game.
HUGE turnover by Syracuse, Keogh can't grab the pass
Leigha Kemmett reporting from Foxborough: "A woman in orange in front of me just took out rosary beads. I couldn't make this stuff up."
Cornell is 3-0 in one-goal games this season, timeout Syracuse
Syracuse takes a timeout.
Crease violation hands Cornell possession with under two minutes to play. One goal lead for the Red
Syracuse wins the face-off, going to attempt to tie it on this possession
Jane Peters reporting from Foxborough: Today's attendance 41,935 - better than the semifinal attendance by about 5,000
Ben Eisen reporting from Foxborough: Fans from both sides on their feet awaiting the conclusion of this national championship game.
Score is now 9-8, timeout Cornell
Junior college transfer Cody Jamieson bounces one past Myers; Cornell calls a time out with a one-goal lead. This upcoming face-off will be huge for the Red.
Cornell takes the timeout.
One-goal game thanks to Cody Jamieson...play starts by Pat Perritt
That was Stephen Keogh's second goal of the day.
The Orange can score so quickly, this game is nowhere near over yet. Cornell discipline must maintain its composure under all this pressure.
Orange scores to make it a two-goal game. Too little too late?
Leigha Kemmett reporting from Foxborough: "PA announcers saying that any fans that rush the field will be arrested."
Cornell is going to have to bleed the time out to prevent Syracuse from picking up some last minute momentum.
Desperation time for the Orange; you can say that again
5:31 to a national championship.
YES WE CAN FEEL IT IN ITHACA!
Roy Lang, for the second game in a row, gets some space and scores a cushion goal. A rising star in Cornell's midfield, Lang has some serious scoring talent. Cornell up 9-6.
The "hustle" stats are still called the "Boiardi" stats, because he always put the team before himself.
California's own Roy Lang puts the Red up by 3.
Leigha Kemmett reporting from Foxborough: "A few Syracuse players just got switched out, they kept crouching down every chance they got, I assume out of exhaustion."
It's Tambroni's goal to condition Cornell players so well that game day is the easiest day of the week.
THIS is why we put Max Seibald front and center on the Spring Sports Supplement cover.
Wow; incredibly clutch goal by Seibald, showing the world why he's the captain. He just raced around his defender and fired a shot from 15 yards out
Max Seibald turns it on again, Cornell up 8-6.
30 more seconds of Cornell man up.
Pannell made an incredible play to keep this free possession going for the Red. Even if the Orange gets possession, the Red will get it right back because of the penalty
Fans not happy with this style of lacrosse, but who cares, it's effective.
Same formula as the Virginia fourth quarter: draw the penalty and play keep-away for as long as possible
That was an incredibly close call; only Keogh's errant right hand prevented a tie game.
Cornell will be a man up for 30 seconds.
"Big break for the Big Red."
The Red is pressuring more on defense in this fourth quarter. Syracuse goal waved off because of a crease violation.
"Let's go Orange" cheer is stifled by a "Let's go Red" chant from the Cornell crowd
Seems like the Red is showing some nerves early in this fourth quarter; a few missed plays that they usually make.
Cornell has 39 straight wins when it leads after 3 quarters.
Cornell is 12-0 this year after leading after three quarters
Let's hope the Red can make this rally short-lived. That was Hardy's 25th goal of the season; he's No. 3 on the team in scoring
Dan Hardy cuts the lead to 7-6.
Cornell's doing a great job controlling the pace so far in the second half, but you've got to believe Syracuse will come out with a head full of steam in the fourth quarter. The Red will need to stay within its game and play possession offense, rather than trying to run with the Orange.
"Upset-minded Cornell"...15 minutes from first national title since 1977...third quarter comes to a close, Red still on top, 7-5
Keogh just misses a last-second goal; Cornell up 7-5 with 15 minutes to play
Lau missed a perfect opportunity streaking in front of the goal, but Cornell maintains possession
SYRACUSE FAIL. Misses the net, and a golden chance to cut the Cornell lead to one.
Cornell's first stall warning of the game; they had about five or six of these against Virginia, but it didn't change the strategy at all
Cornell is really winding down the clock with these long possessions
I've also heard the Goldstein-Pannell comparison about 20 times this season. Get some new material, ESPN
I've heard the phrase "No respect for his body" applied to Glynn about 20 times this season.
Hurley does a great job drawing the defender then finding Glynn in front of the net
John Glynn is on fire! Cornell back up by 2, 7-5.
Seibald did a nice job drawing the penalty, but the Red couldn't get anything done on the man-up
Cornell and Syracuse are even on groundballs 16-16
30 seconds man up for Cornell.
Leigha Kemmett reporting from Foxborough: Cornell Class of 1936 swearing loudly at the Orange after that last goal
Syracuse tacks on another goal from Josh Amidon to get things going, 6-5 in favor of Cornell
Syracuse already has 3 turnovers for the half.
Robert Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots, is in attendance and says that they are very privileged to host the national championship game, as lacrosse is an up-and-coming sport.
Pannell found a teammate on the doorstep but the REd couldn't connect, Syracuse with possession
30 Seconds man up for Cornell.
Teams trading turnovers early in the second half.
Syracuse turns it back over with an offsides call
Galloway made an incredible save on a shot by Finn; not sure how he even saw that shot with all the traffic in front of the net.
Key stat: Nims has no points on two shots. Someone (probably Matt Moyer) is playing great defense on SU's top scorer
Syracuse head coach John Desko says his team has been playing way too much defense today, and needs to change that and get opportunities offensively.
John Glynn is leading the Red with two goals, two assists and three ground balls.
Leigha Kemmett reporting from Foxborough: Halftime celebration of the 25th anniversary of the 1984 Johns Hopkins national championship team.
Cornell: 30 minutes from first national title in 30 years says ESPN!
We're at the half and the Red is looking strong. John Glynn has been the offensive mastermind for the Red and Syracuse will need to neutralize him if they want a shot at coming back .
Syracuse needs to execute better on both ends of the field, according to an ESPN lacrosse analyst
The former Syracuse goalie, Myers, saves his sixth to end the half and preserve Cornell's 6-4 advantage
Desko drew up a great play but Myers absolutely stoned Keogh on the doorstep. Great play by the senior goalie from California
Syracuse uses its final timeout for the half.
Cornell will be a man down for the last 15 seconds of the half.
He even worked out with the team and gave them some tips
Shaq paid a visit to the Syracuse team this past week and met with the guys
Cornell calls a timeout
Really nice effort by Derkac to keep Hardy from maintaining possession. Cornell back on offense with 1:26 to play in the half.
Leigha Kemmett reporting from Foxborough: There was just a great video of Tambroni thanking all the Cornell fans.
SU coach Desko looking to draw up a play to get the Orange at least one more goal before halftime.
Time-out Syracuse, with under 2 minutes to go in the first half
Galloway makes two nice saves on decent shots by David Lau
Syracuse head coach Desko looks mad. His team isn't putting things together right now.
Jeff Tambroni was a former assistant under Dave Pietramala of Johns Hopkins, and called him for advice after the semi-final.
Max Siebald is on the board with a sidearm shot to put Cornell up 6-4.
Rob Pannell has arrived. Puts one in the back of the net to put Cornell up 5-4.
Cornell's second midfield line seeing a ton of time. Tambroni keeping Glynn/Seibald/Romero rested.
Good defense by the Red forces an errant SU pass for the turnover. 6:08 to play in the half
Cornell's athletics website is down... guess ESPN really does have a big audience.
Perritt lost stick, but regains it
Pannell and Hurley compared to Stockton and Malone... awesome
Agreed, Cornell has to slow this thing down.
This pace really is more suited to SU than the Red. Syracuse can score those quick goals all day long.
Game tied once again, 4-4 on Pat Perritt goal
Rob Pannell hasn't turned it on yet, Glynn has had all the action on offense.
Pannell looking for the junk goal around the crease, denied by Galloway
That was Romero's 17th goal for the season, and an absolute rocket.
And the band is playing "Give My Regards to Davy..."
Glynn has had a hand in all four of Cornell's goals today. Romero fired an absolute rocket past half of Syracuse's team.
Romero scores from distance to put Cornell back on top, 4-3.
The quick turnover at midfield let the Orange back in. Cornell has to own its half if it wants to win.
Stephen Keogh responsible for equalizing goal.
Syracuse's ride comes through again. Myers is going to need to find a go-to outlet guy. I recommend Seibald
Syracuse has leveled the game at 3-all
Cornell playing a little aggressive on the ride, almost got taken advantage of there.
So we're back for the second quarter. I think Cornell is going to have to keep the pace high if it wants to hold on to this lead.
Cornell up 3-2 at the end of the first quarter.
John Glynn missed his graduation ceremony to be here.
Leigha Kemmett reporting from Foxborough: "There are a ton of Glynn signs on the Cornell side and he has a ton of fans of the female variety from what I can see."
Mitch Alva reporting from Foxborough: "The offense is looking very strong when they slow down and don't rush the shot. Great start for Glynn and the defense."
Seibald trying to restore the lead with one shot; Red can't get jumpy about a tie game or they risk falling into Syracuse's strengths
John Glynn has been a beast in the faceoff.
Goal for Syracuse, 2-all
Daniello's goal illustrates Syracuse's strength; they can score in any unsettled situation.
...thanks to Chris Daniello
2-1 Cornell
Leigha Kemmett reporting from Foxborough: "I am sitting behind three of the oldest Cornell alums that could reasonably make it to the game. They graduated in '36 but yell like they're still 18"
John Glynn again! Cornell 2-0
Syracuse with too many players on their defensive half of the field, 30 sec man-up opportunity for CU
Cornell is doing a great job getting men in front of the net, Syracuse is facing a wall on the offensive end.
Roy Lang with a great push and ground ball recovery, but Cornell can't complete the clear. Syracuse with possession.
Cornell 12-1 when scoring first.
Cornell is 12-0 when it leads after the first quarter.
John Glynn FTW!
Nice shot by Glynn; when he finds room he can shoot as well as any middie in the nation.
GOAL JOHN GLYNN!
Quint's keys for Cornell: START FAST.
Syracuse's ride played really well last game, made Cornell's clears an adventure every time. They'll need to play intelligent on the clear to avoid costly turnovers
Syracuse keeping it slow. Waiting for their opportunity.
Seibald guarding SU's Matt Abbott - two Tewaaraton trophy finalists going head-to-head
Glynn called for a violation on the first face-off, Syracuse gets the first possession
Cornell also has picked up wins against 2 former No.1's this season, Virginia and Princeton.
Quick thoughts: Cornell has wins over the only two teams (Princeton and Virginia) to defeat Syracuse this season.
In the Orange's 15-10 win on April 7, neither attackman Cody Jamieson nor face-off specialist Jake Moulton played.
Coverage of the game will be brought to those of us at home by ESPN reporter Dave Ryan and Johns Hopkins Hall of Fame goalie Quint Kessenich, live from Gillette Stadium (home of the New England Patriots).
Leigha Kemmett reporting from Foxborough: "Lots of loud rap music pre-game, reminds me of Johnny O's."
Mitch Alva reporting from Foxborough: "Cornell crowd is ready to go five minutes before face-off. It's going to be emotional for the Red. It's been 21 years since the Red won a final; and the late George Boiardi wore number 21, which has become a symbol for the team."
The Red really has played a different game since they faced Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. If they can control the half, then they've got an awesome shot at beating the Orange at their own game.
The official game preview can be found here: http://cornellsun.com/section/sports/content/2009/05/24/championship-lin...
Cliff Notes version: The loss to Syracuse earlier this season spurred a change in the team's philosophy to move away from fast-paced offense to more deliberate, possession-oriented offense.
Both of these teams dominated their semifinal matchups, and though the Red may be the underdogs, their domination of No. 1 Virginia has to give them a huge dose of confidence. I'm looking for freshman Rob Pannell to continue his scoring run in the tournament.
Hey everyone; should be a great game today. Leigha Kemmett reporting from Foxborough: "There's a ton of traffic, most of the parking lots are already full and I see a lot more Syracuse fans than Cornell."
