For most students, writing is not an easy task — not even for many English majors. Nonetheless, as almost everyone who has taken a freshman writing seminar knows, Cornell has bred some of the great writers of our time — Vonnegut, White, Pynchon, Nabokov. One such writer, Pulitzer Prize winning author Junot Díaz, is visiting campus this week. His visit is the start of the creative writing program’s Centennial Plus Five Celebration of Creative Writing at Cornell. In this week’s Red Letter Daze, we take a look at this celebration — why we are celebrating, the history of creative writing at Cornell, and some of the great Cornell references in literature.
For those particularly interesting in creative writing and poetry, take a look at this week’s The Finer Things — and send us your submissions! We’d love to be the first to publish the next great Cornell author (or photographer!). If writing isn’t your thing, check out this week’s culinary page, with great drink ideas and Daze food columnist Kevin Boyd’s anecdotes of kitchen mishaps, and ways for you to avoid them. If fashion is your forte, read about our favorite spring trends and styles on this week’s fashion page, and see who we’ve picked as our best dressed student of the week.
For those hiding inside from the winter weather, Sun web editor Chris Barnes offers a comprehensive review of various iPhone games, giving his expert opinion on each. If you’re looking for a snack or the best toilet paper brand, this week’s Shameless Commerce compares popcorn and toilet paper (FYI: Cornell, your toilet paper is sub-par).
Either way, we hope you enjoy this week’s Daze and remember to keep in touch! Just send an email to redletterdaze@cornellsun.com, and let us know what you think.
