There’s really no bad reason to celebrate. The Sun is about to celebrate — and mourn — the yearly passing of control of the paper from one editorial board to the next. (Not to fear, your trusty mixology columnist will be sticking around.) Since the weather has been above freezing almost every day this week, which is an accomplishment for Ithaca in February, I think we should celebrate warmth. What better way to celebrate warmth than to make yourself cold with some delicious frozen drinks? It’s also a fun activity to do with some friends as you attempt to pad your bodies with alcohol warmth before leaving for the bars or a party. All you need is a blender and ice. Oh wait, liquor and mixers are necessary, too.
Frozen Margarita
1 1/2 oz. tequila
1/2 oz. triple sec
1 oz. lemon or lime juice
1 cup ice
Pour ingredients into the aforementioned blender and blend on low for five seconds; switch blender to high and continue until firm. If you’re feeling fancy, wet the rim of the glass and dip it in salt before pouring the drink in.
Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri
1 ½ oz. light rum
4 large, fresh strawberries
1 cup ice
Pour ingredients into blender and blend on low for five seconds; switch to high and continue until firm.
If you want to impress your guests, layer the strawberry daiquiri with a fruit daiquiri of another color: substitute 10 blueberries and three ounces sour mix or a banana for strawberries in the above recipe.
Mississippi Mud
1 1/2 oz. Southern Comfort
1 1/2 oz. coffee liqueur
2 scoops vanilla ice cream
Blend until smooth, making sure not to turn the drink into soup.
Purple Rain
1 1/4 oz. blue curacao
1 1/4 oz. vodka
2 oz. grenadine
1/4 oz. lime juice
2 oz. pineapple juice
1 cup ice
Pour ingredients into blender and blend on low for five seconds; switch blender to high and continue until firm.
