Too Many Great Times for Drinking

February 1, 2008

It’s been a great time of year for political drinking. Monday saw Bush’s last State of the Union and all of its associated drinking games — there are at least as many as years he was in office. If you missed that, each party held a debate this week: Republicans on Wednesday; Democrats yesterday.

Super Tuesday — the day that primary elections are held in 22 states, including New York — is coming up this week, on Feb. 5. The ideas for drinking games while watching those results are endless.

But who am I kidding? This very weekend one of the greatest drinking days of the year occurs: Super Bowl Sunday.

For many of the middle-aged men where I grew up, where and with whom they watched the Sunday games every week defined their social lives. Since Super Bowl Sunday is the mother of all Sundays, going all out for a party was not uncommon. Even for people who do not care about football 364 days a year, Super Bowl Sunday should be a fun event.

Wings and beer are the obvious choice for the night, but you should celebrate in style. Leave the Keystone, Beast and Natty in the fridge and buy something that doesn’t come in quantities of 30.

And make sure to have something other than beer. The non-football obsessed people who come over to watch your TV will have a much better time.

Makeable, pleaseable punch:

Hawaiian Punch or any generic equivalent

Vodka

Rum

Fruit Schnapps (if you are willing to shell out the extra money)

Ice

Thin fruit slices

Large Bowl

Add some ice to the large bowl. Pour in punch and alcohol in an equal ratio (you can adjust this for how strong you want it to be). Add fruit garnish as desired.

Try to use different flavors of schnapps and punch for a little variety.
