Grudge Match

In this week’s Grudge Match, Assistant Sports Editors Cory Bennett ’09 and Lance Williams ’08 ponder Michael Vick’s chances of playing in the NFL again.

Bennett: I am going to say that he will never play in the NFL again. Before the dog-fighting scandal, how many teams would take Michael Vick over their quarterback? Most teams would not take Michael Vick because their team does not fit his skill-set.

Williams: So you are going to argue that he is not talented enough…

Bennett: It’s not even talent.

Williams: What are we talking about, then?

Bennett: It’s just his certain kind of skills; you have to have a team built around him.

Williams: I am going to tell you why you are wrong. The NFL is cutthroat, teams will do whatever they have to do to win. Vick still is one of the top-5 quarterbacks. Granted, he’s not as accurate as you might think. But he signed a 10-year, $130 million contract.

Bennett: Contracts aren’t indicative of talent.

Williams: Absolutely they are indicative of talent! Let me tell you this much, when he gets out of jail, the NFL is probably going to suspend him. But, I think he is talented enough and there is enough demand for his skill-set. He just broke the quarterback rushing record so clearly he is valuable to teams.

Bennett: But, have you ever seen a public outcry over an issue like this? I honestly don’t think teams can take the P.R. hit of signing this guy.

Williams: This is where my original point comes in that the league is cutthroat. In three years this whole thing is going to die down. People aren’t going to care as much about “The Dog-Killer” as the fact that he can play some football.
