After a preseason filled with talk of a balanced and prolific offensive attack, the men’s hockey team relied on some familiar faces for its offensive production as it managed to squeak out a 3-2 overtime victory over Niagara on Saturday. Senior captain Colin Greening netted a goal and an assist, junior Riley Nash tallied two assists, and junior Joe Devin potted the overtime winner in the Red’s first regular season game of the year.

The honeymoon is almost over, but in the meantime, Niagara is up next for the No. 6 men’s hockey team. The Purple Eagles are the last non-conference game until Thanksgiving on the Red’s schedule, and face-off is at 7 p.m. in Lynah Rink. Niagara is 0-3-1 this season, but pushed No. 5 Michigan in a close 3-2 loss on Oct. 22. Cornell split its two exhibition games last weekend, routing Windsor, 7-0, then falling to the U.S. Under-18 National Team, 3-2, on Saturday. Despite the loss to the youngsters on Saturday, the Red saw balanced scoring throughout the weekend, which head coach Mike Schafer ’86 identified as one of the keys to the upcoming season.

Inexperience Dooms W. Soccer

The women’s soccer team could not utilize its home field advantage and went without a win this weekend, earning instead a scoreless tie against Binghamton on Friday and a 3-1 loss to Niagara on Sunday.

“I thought we played good soccer but it was disappointing because we made some rookie mistakes that caused us to give up goals. We really showed inexperience,” said head coach Danielle LaRoche.

Newcomers Will See Ample Time in W. Soccer’s Opener

Laura Dwulet  —  Sep 4, 2009

The women’s soccer team starts off its season this weekend, playing host to Binghamton today, and then traveling to face Niagara on Sunday.

“We are just excited to play,” said junior co-captain Lena Russomagno. “After preseason, after practicing a lot, we are just excited to get out there and show what we’ve got and show what we’ve been doing in practice.”

The Red’s first matchup will be against Binghamton, a team that’s coming off a pair of losses last weekend at Delaware and Saint Joseph’s. Binghamton edges out Cornell in the series between the teams, 1-0-1, and tied Cornell the last time the two teams met, back in 2004.
