Andrew Boryga  —  Oct 26, 2009

“No homo” has become an ubiquitous term used in Cornell’s classrooms, dining halls and locker rooms. In an attempt to distance their comments from any homosexual interpretations, many of Cornell’s males use this derogatory expression without fully understanding its implications.

Amit Taneja, associate director of LGBT Reourse Center at Syracuse University and national consultant on LGBT issues, spoke with a group of about 30 students Friday evening in Balch Hall at the event titled “Pause — No Homo?!”

As an LGBTQ-identified person of faith, this incident brings about many emotions. Part of me is sick to my core, and part of me is simply disappointed. Most of all, though, I am very saddened by this turn of events. For many people, myself included, finding a meaningful way to integrate two fundamental, yet seemingly irreconcilable aspects of our existence proves nearly impossible. Chris’ efforts to prove that it is possible to be a gay, devout Christian are truly inspiring. What upsets me is that instead of receiving support, he was rejected for having found a solution that affirms his sense of self in multiple ways.

Editor’s Note: After Chris Donohoe ’09 finished his term as vice president of Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship, he was set to become a member of the leadership team last fall. The organization’s pastors, however, stipulated that he could hold this position as long as he did not engage in a relationship with another man. After Donohoe met his boyfriend, Jarrod Schaeffer ’09, last summer, the pastors asked Donohoe to step down from the team without consulting the rest of the organization.

The Berry Patch: Flag Displays that Almost Went Unnoticed

Feb 17, 2009

We were pretty consumed with all the talk about Milstein last week, but when someone mentioned that there were flags on the Arts Quad, we perked up — everybody loves a good news story. And the display kept changing shape! Throughout the week it seemed that everybody partook and created their very own alternative flag display. While you were all busy reading about the black flags on the Arts Quad, we caught the five following displays that sadly went unnoticed by most ...

1 FLAG

In lieu of the much needed director, office manager and assistant dean for the LGBTQ community and resource center, a group of disgruntled students hoisted one lonely rainbow flag — representing the measly one person needed! — on the top of the clock tower.

5 FLAGS
