Both the Interfraternity Council and the Student Assembly unanimously passed resolutions this week in support of a campaign to spread awareness about New York State’s Good Samaritan law.
The Interfraternity Council will vote on a resolution Wednesday that, if approved, would allow its judicial board to impose financial penalties on fraternities found to be in violation of some policies.
The IFC's decision to ban social events this past weekend did not align with any of their long-term goals and appears to have produced little, if any, substantive progress.
In its meeting Wednesday night, the Interfraternity Council announced that a new fraternity will likely come to campus in Spring 2011. The council also passed an addendum to the University Recognition Policy that puts into concrete terms the IFC’s privilege of self-governance.
With an ongoing campus debate regarding the administration’s controversial changes to the Greek system, President David Skorton sat down with The Sun on Tuesday to discuss the plan. He expressed support for the changes, as well as for the Greek system’s history of self-governance.
Since the announcement of the “non-negotiable” changes to the University Recognition Policy that would considerably restrict drinking in the Greek system, the Interfraternity Council has lagged behind the other two Greek-letter councils in beginning to set a plan to implement the new policies.
As part of an ongoing effort to increase the safety of open fraternity parties, the Interfraternity Council passed two resolutions at the beginning of the semester that further regulate how fraternities operate their social events. As a result of this legislation, all fraternities can only hire security companies that are licensed and bonded by the State of New York. Furthermore, fraternities must clearly mark the party’s sober monitors.
