Football’s Skid Hits Seven After Senior Day Loss

Matthew Manacher  —  Nov 16, 2009

After erasing two early deficits and entering halftime with a 20-16 advantage, it appeared Cornell was going to send its 16-member senior class out on a high note Saturday afternoon in its final game at Schoellkopf Field. A 19-yard scamper into the end zone by Columbia’s senior quarterback, M.A. Olawale, with 1:51 left in regulation cemented a 30-20 road victory for the Lions. However, it was the six interceptions suffered by Cornell quarterbacks on the afternoon that sealed the Red’s fate.

Walters Continues to Dazzle

Every time senior Bryan Walters touches the football, he breaks a record, or so it seems.

The Bothell, Wash., native holds every school kickoff and punt return record. Walters was one of the few bright spots for Cornell last week during a 34-14 defeat to Brown, as he eclipsed Chad Levitt ’96 for a school record 5,233 career all-purpose yards and moved into second place all-time in Ivy League history behind the 6,138 yard mark set by Harvard’s Clifton Dawson set in 2006. Earlier this year Walters surpassed legendary running back Ed Marinaro ’72 for all-purpose yards.

Football Falls to Ivy Preseason Favorite Harvard

Keenan Weatherford  —  Oct 14, 2009

The names and shade of red on the uniforms changed, but to a casual onlooker, the football team’s 28-10 loss to Harvard on Saturday might have seemed like a repeat of the prior week’s game. For the second game in a row, Cornell was physically outmatched on both sides of the ball and gave up more than 200 rushing yards while struggling to get its own ground game in sync. Crimson junior running back Gino Gordon, who led his team with 137 rushing yards and a touchdown, summed up the reason behind his team’s success on the ground.

“The holes were wide open, and I just ran through them,” he said.

Cornell Hosts Harvard In Fall Break Action

Matthew Manacher  —  Oct 9, 2009

It was a forgettable season in 2008 for Cornell thanks in large part to a game that most of the returning players cannot forget. Last year the Red traveled to Cambridge, Mass., to challenge Harvard. Cornell entered the contest with a spotless 3-0 record thanks to an upset victory against Yale and a last-second touchdown at Lehigh the previous week. The senior-laden team was primed for its best season yet, but a 38-17 drubbing in the national spotlight on VERSUS sparked a four-game losing skid for the Red.
