Sometimes it almost seems as if The Man has a sense of irony.

On July 17, Amazon.com pulled copies of George Orwell’s Animal Farm and 1984 from its new, fancy-schmancy electronic Kindle readers. These digitized books were apparently “illegal copies” that the website had inadvertently offered for sale. The company quickly refunded readers for the misunderstanding (and cognitive dissonance). Ha!

Depression. That’s right, the D word. You know, I’ve got to hand it to Yankees fans, depression is tough. I think it’s something you learned from your counterparts in Boston, especially after that loss to the Marlins in 2004. That was the last time the pinstriped knights from the Bronx were even close to being World Champs. I can understand why you’ve been depressed.

In light of the recent legalizations of gay-marriage in Iowa and Vermont, author Sherry Wolf yesterday seek to bring attention to the continuous fight against the oppression of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning communities throughout history, from the 1969 Stonewall riots to the current controversy over Proposition 8, California’s 2008 ban on gay marriage.

The lecture, which was sponsored by the International Socialist Organization and Haymarket Books, attracted about 20 people.
